Demand up for ‘green’ paper

Montreal—A new report from environmental publishing advocates, Markets Initiative, shows buyers of paper have been showing a significant interest in green products over the past seven years.
The study, called “Environmental Leadership in the Paper Supply Chain,” is billed as the first comprehensive review of the “greenward” shift in Canada’s publishing industries and other paper consuming sectors.
“Trends show there has been a marked increase in market demand for papers free of endangered or intact forests such as Canada’s boreal,” said Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Markets Initiative.
“Canadian paper producers that rise to this challenge are gaining significant competitive advantage. Paper companies that take the old pathway stand to lose market share,” Rycroft added.
Public concern about global warming is at an unprecedented high, according to the organization.
Paper producers are the 4th largest industrial energy consumer, and often source from intact forests such as the boreal. But these forests play a key role in climate stabilization, and provide habitat to species such as cariboo.
The report also makes suggestions for paper purchasers, major producers and government to help combat climate change. b2b
