More functionality for smaller workgroups: Vendors come to market with faster, colour-capable MFPs

Xerox Canada Ltd. has announced a new line of multifunctional devices, geared toward smaller organizations and workgroups.
The Phaser 8560MFP copies, scans and faxes, and handles multiple functions simultaneously. For instance, it can scan while printing or receiving an inbound fax, and a walk-up user can interrupt a print job to make a copy.
An auto colour feature detects the original type and automatically chooses colour or monochrome to save money. The Phaser 8560MFP starts at $1,799.
The Xerox Phaser 6115MFP, a $949 desktop system, prints, copies, scans and faxes, and offers advanced features and high-quality colour to small businesses, according to the company.
It prints up to five pages per minute (ppm) in colour and 20 ppm monochrome, in 2,400 dpi print quality. The ID card copy feature makes it easy to copy both sides of a document, such as an insurance card onto a single sheet of paper.
The device comes with Internet services software, allowing users to remotely manage the device.
Another vendor focusing on the SME market is Hewlett-Packard Co., which just came to market with its Officejet J5700 all-in-one series, comprised of a high-performance printer, scanner, copier and fax machine. It was designed for home and small business users who need to produce professional-quality documents.
Features include a junk fax blocker, optional high-capacity inkjet cartridges, and a 35-page legal-size automatic document feeder. The display window allows users to track supplies and print jobs without a PC.
The device is also small enough to fit on a desk. Output is up to 30 ppm in black and 24 ppm in colour. Scanning resolution is 2,400 by 4,800 dpi and 48-bit colour. The price for the 5700 series is $199.
HP announced an additional MFP, billed as the world’s fastest desktop all-in-one for business colour. The HP Officejet Pro L7000 series provides laser-quality prints at faster speeds and lower cost than comparable printers, according to the company.
The series—which offers flexible networking—outputs up to 35 ppm black and up to 34 ppm in colour. Laser quality speeds are 12 ppm black and up to 10 ppm colour. Documents and photos may be printed directly from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, USB memory devices and Bluetooth-enabled devices, without having to turn on a PC.
Embedded wired and wireless networking, along with direct digital filing, allow users to capture, manage and share documents. The device also has 2,400 dpi CCD optical resolution flatbed scanning capabilities, according to HP.
The base model (L7500) includes built-in wired networking capability, and is priced at $399. The L7600 all-in-one includes the additional features of direct digital filing, a 2.4-inch colour graphics display, a legal-size glass surface and a duplexer. The price is $499.
Another available model—the L7700, includes all the features of the L7600, plus built-in wireless networking, optical character recognition software, and a 350-sheet paper tray. Pricing for the L7700 is $599. All three models became available in Canada last month.
For its part, Canon Canada Inc. (Mississauga, Ont.) launched the imageRunner1023 series, which was designed to handle a variety of document creation and distribution needs.
They’re also suitable as shared or dedicated devices within small businesses, workgroups, or executive suites within larger organizations.
“In recent years, the power of the Internet and high-speed digital connections has brought new life to the small business and workgroup market and has revolutionized the way people work today in these environments,” says Mason Olds, vice-president and general manager of the imaging solutions group of Canon Canada.
Each device in the 1023 series has a legal-sized platen glass to handle single-page originals or odd-sized objects such as books and maps. Each model comes with automatic duplexing, a 500-sheet front-loading paper cassette and 100-sheet stack bypass.
Users also have the ability to add an additional 500-sheet paper cassette for a total capacity of 1,100 sheets. The 1023iF/1023N models offer a 50-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder for quick handling of multi-page originals.
Each model in the new series delivers output at enhanced 1,200 x 600 dpi resolution, Canon reports. The devices are also Energy Star qualified. Manufacturer suggested list prices for the machines are $2,425 for the 1023iF, $2,010 for the 1023N, and $1,500 for the imageRunner 1023. Os
