Motorola buying Symbol
Schaumburg, Ill.—Motorola Inc.the world's second-largest handset maker, is planning to buy Symbol Technologies Inc., for about US $3.9 billion.
Symbol, based in Holtsville, NY, is a manufacturer of barcode scanners, Palm OS and Windows-based handheld computers.
Symbol will operate under the Motorola umbrella, and serve as the cornerstone of Motorola's network business.
The deal is expected to close late 2006 or early 2007.
