Aclo Compounders sold to new owner
The constantly changing scene in raw materials underwent another major shift last week with the purchase of Aclo Compounders Inc. (Cambridge, Ont.) by Matrixx Group Inc. (Evansville, Inc.) Matrixx not long ago purchased Bulk Molding Compounds Inc. (West Chicago, Ill.), a producer of additive and colour compounds, so the company is moving fast to establish itself as a major player in North America.
Aclo supplies both engineering and commodity thermoplastics. It has been in business for 44 years, and was most recently owned by Japan's Mitsubishi Corp. The new name will be Aclo Compounders – a business unit of the Matrixx Group. The company's current sales and marketing staff will remain in place.
Matrixx president Keith Rodden said that his company was attracted to Aclo's custom base and product line. His own firm is owned by Citadel Plastic Holdings Inc., which in turn is controlled by a Chicago private equity firm, Wind Point Partners LLC. Matrixx was purchased in 2007, and this became the cornerstone of Citadel Plastic Holdings.
“We have been trying to establish a presence in Canada for some time,” Rodden says. “We did try to acquire another company previously, but we found 85 percent of its business was in the US, and that wasn't what we were after.
“We can bring some technology that will be of benefit to Aclo's existing customers. But since Aclo exited the toll compounding business, it currently has excess capacity, so it won't add equipment in the near future.” Although there have been customer plant closings in Canada, he sees a solid potential here. Aclo was particularly attractive to Matrixx because it is not focused on just one market, but has the diversity to ride out sectoral ups and downs.

Water footprint new focus of attention
We're used to hearing about the carbon footprints of different products and processes. Now Borealis, an Austrian-based polyolefins producer, has joined with Uponor, a plumbing and heating systems supplier, to apply the idea of water footprints to plastics manufacturing.
The two used the World Water Week event in Sweden to announce they were applying the concept to assess the amount of water needed to equip a typical home with a modern plumbing and underfloor heating system. Water footprint is spearheaded by academics and environmental NGOs, and pilot projects have started in the food and drink industry. Borealis' and Uponor's findings will be shared with researchers to align varying approaches and offer validated methodologies for other products or value chains.
The initiative will investigate water uses across the entire plastics industry, from raw materials extraction to a full system installed in a home. Initial findings show that a typical under floor heating and tap water plumbing systems for a 100 cu. metre (1,000 sq ft) apartment using 500 metres of PEX pipe require some 29 cu. metres of water in total. The plastics material and pipe production account for a third of the total footprint of the system once installed.

Frigel nominated for Sustainable Technology award
Frigel North America (Lake Zurich, Ill.) , a manufacturer of industrial process cooling and temperature control equipment, has been named one of two finalists for the 2008 Illinois Sustainable Technology Award. Established in 2001, the award honors those companies who have developed technology that supports sustainability efforts and benefits the environment.
Frigel was recognised for its Ecodry system, an alternative to cooling towers, which reportedly saves up to 95 percent in water consumption and energy bills. It operates by pumping the water returning from the process into heat exchangers and cooling it with ambient air flow. Its closed-loop system ensures water is never exposed to outside elements which can lead to contamination problems and chemical evaporation into the environment. In addition, because the Ecodry recycles clean water continuously, the amount of water usage is significantly reduced.
