StackTeck launches IML tryout line
Mould systems supplier StackTeck (Brampton, Ont.) has a new dedicated system for prototyping and pilot runs of in-mould labeled (IML) products. The system, available in October, is equipped to run a single cavity mould, with automated handling of pre-cut labels, as well as part de-moulding and stacking automation.
Randy Yakimishyn, president, says “We're taking the initiative to work with leading equipment suppliers, to minimise our customers' up front costs involved with new IML product development. IML technology offers tremendous added value for injection moulded parts, by enabling high quality decoration with a broader range of part design features, such as non-round shapes, tamper evidence, and the use of pigmented resins. For two recent projects, our customers have reported sales volume increases of 12 percent and 23 percent, following the introduction of a new IML package.”
Since IML is still relatively new in North America, prototyping of new products can be expensive. StackTeck's pilot cell will be available for customers' projects, and will include a Netstal SynErgy 3500 machine and a CBW IML robot that can be configured for the different types of IML parts. Wraparound labels up to 28 in. in length can be handled, and the cell also includes a multi-purpose mould base, so that a customer will only need to purchase moulding surface components and robotic end-of-arm tooling parts in order to prototype a new part under production conditions.
StackTeck first ventured into IML development in 2005 with a dedicated system, and successfully supported several new product launches, before selling the system to a leading IML moulder in the US.

DuPont launches 21st packaging contest
DuPont is once again sponsoring its independently judged DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. This will be the 21st year the event has been held. Given the critical importance of sustainability in the packaging industry, these will once again place special emphasis on innovations that provide more sustainable packaging solutions.
Announcing the call for entries at the Sustainable Packaging Forum in Denver, Col., Carolann Haznedar, vice-president – DuPont Packaging, said, “Sustainability matters to packaged goods companies and consumers. As a leader in providing sustainable solutions, DuPont is committed to supporting the journey toward sustainable packaging.”
According to Haznedar, winners of the recently concluded 20th DuPont Awards demonstrated real progress toward improved sustainability, from Kraft's redesigned salad dressing bottle which cut weight by nearly 20 percent while improving transport efficiency, to Marks & Spencer's renewably sourced, compostable confectionery package inserts, to Larsen Danish Seafood's single serve ambient food packaging that helps reduce food waste.
Entries for the 21st DuPont Awards will be accepted until Feb. 13, 2009.  Packaging designers, converters, consumer and industrial packagers, and equipment manufacturers from around the world are encouraged to enter their new product packaging developments by this date, which no longer require plastic materials as an essential component. Innovation factors such as enhanced performance, responsible sourcing, clean production and effective recovery will be considered in selecting the winners.  Entries need not include a DuPont product to be eligible.

Sartomer, R.N. Ferguson celebrate four decades
Global specialty chemicals manufacturer Sartomer Co. and R.M. Ferguson Specialty Chemicals (Brampton, Ont.) recently marked their 40th anniversary of working together to promote photocure monomers, resins, and other products used in rubber, adhesive, coatings, inks, and other applications. The companies marked the anniversary with a dinner reception and golf event near Sartomer's corporate headquarters in Exton, Pa.
The two companies began working together after R.M. Ferguson president David Jackson, Sr., inked the deal with Sartomer in 1968. His son, David Jackson, Jr., is the company's current president.
