Canadian Springs starts deposit program
Bottled water firm Canadian Springs plans to start selling its half-litre bottles of water with a deposit of 25 cents per bottle. The firm sells most of its water directly to homes and institutional customers, but also will be offering the deposit system to retailers that choose to participate.
"This 500-millilitre deposit program is a model for environmentally responsible packaging management that will result in the return of almost all Canadian Springs 500-millitre bottles," company president Richard Stephens said in a news release. Canadian Springs is part of Aquaterra Corp. (Mississauga, Ont.)
To date, PET single-serve water bottles have been either recycled through municipal recycling programs or, too often, simply discarded. Canadian Springs hopes this waste stream can be captured more effectively through a deposit system.

Italy's Piovan acquires Universal Dynamics
Universal Dynamics Inc. (Woodbridge, Pa.) has been bought by Piovan SpA (Santa Maria di Sala, Italy) from its owner, German-based automotive supplier Mann+Hummel GmbH. The US firm makes conveyors, dryers, loaders, feeders and granulators, as does Piovan, which is one of Europe's larger suppliers in the field.
Piovan also produces chillers, mould drying equipment and temperature controllers. Piovan's headquarters are in northeastern Italy, near Venice.
It already has plants in Brazil and China. It also maintains a sales and service operation in Mississauga, Ont.
The intent after the sale is to maintain the Una-Dyn brand, as well as the plant in Pennsylvania. The two companies have not yet announced what changes in management, if any, may result.
Mann+Hummel GmbH purchased Una-Dyn from its US founders in the mid-1990s.
