Aerospace offers opportunities for tool builders
The tool-building business is having a problematic year, but it does have alternatives. One of them is aerospace.
The global aerospace industry is in a strong growth period which is still expected to continue over the next several years. Current industry capacity for machined components is stretched to the limit, and major Ontario and Canadian aerospace firms are actively seeking additional qualified suppliers.
On November 3, the Canadian Tooling & Machining Association is repeating a talk given recently by Rod Jones of the Ontario Aerospace Council at its recent annual general meeting. This time, it will be given in Windsor, Ont., at the Giovanni Caboto Club so that southwest Ontario's toolmaking and plastics processing executives can hear it.
There's a crossover between the high-precision machining techniques used in the tooling business and the requirements of aerospace. Tooling suppliers are used to the type of close-tolerance work needed for aircraft, and automotive mould builders also understand the long development cycles needed.
Aerospace companies, working together through the Ontario Aerospace Council (OAC), are interested in informing, encouraging, and assisting new suppliers to enter the industry in such a way as to strengthen its overall competitiveness, as well as augmenting its capacity. Funding is available for Ontario MTDM companies interested in this diversification initiative through the Ontario Aerospace Council and the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development.
Space is available at the on a first-come-first served basis. For further information, call the CTMA at 519-653-7265 or info@ctma.com.

Were you at the Expoplast show this week in Montreal? The two-day was officially opened on Monday by Ron Desjardins, director of business development at Plastilec Inc. and chairman of the organising committee of Expoplast 2008; Richard Deschamps, an advisor in economic and sustainable development, representing the mayor of Montreal; Nicole Ménard, parliamentary assistant to Raymond Bachand, Quebec's Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Exports and Minister of Tourism; and Denis Cloutier, vice-president of marketing at PolyExpert, and chairman for Québec of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association.

Click here and see a lineup of other photos from the show. We'll be adding more with next week's enewsletter.

Quebec group to hire executive director
FÉPAC – the Fédération des Plastiques et Alliance Composites – has announced it is creating its own charter, and plans to hire a director-general by the end of October. This follows from a meeting this Quebec group held in Drummondville, Que., in April.
FÉPAC, which consists partly of companies that broke away from the Canadian Plastics Industry Association earlier this year, plans on holding its first general meeting during the week of November 24, at which time it will elect a board of directors. At the same meeting, it will decide on its program for the coming year, how it will participate in developing industrial strategy in 2009-10, and what value propositions the members want.
Bernard Poitras, president of Plastique Micron, who is coordinating the new group along with a transitional council, says it has managed to reach its target of $80,000 in funds, which enables it to take these steps.

NPE2009 to feature emerging technologies
A new type of multi-exhibitor pavilion to debut at next year's NPE2009 plastics show will present the latest developments in four emerging technologies. The Emerging Technologies Pavilion will have exhibits and informational stations operated by companies, government agencies, and research consortia active in four sectors: sustainability, bioplastics, nanotechnology, and energy—the last including conservation and alternate sources.
The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI), founder and producer of the triennial NPE event, is accepting applications from companies and organisations seeking to participate in the pavilion. DuPont Co. has agreed to be the corporate sponsor of the Emerging Technologies Pavilion, and has indicated it will also present exhibits or displays in all four sectors, reflecting the company's across-the-board activity in these technologies. These will be in addition to DuPont's already planned booth, which will be directly adjacent to the pavilion in the new West Hall of Chicago's McCormick Place.
Three US federal agencies and a research consortium will anchor each sector and provide informational stations:

  • Sustainability: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Bioplastics: U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Office of Technology Transfer
  • Energy: U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
  • Nanotechnology: Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices

The Emerging Technologies Pavilion will occupy 10,400 sq ft in Booth 117011 in McCormick West. Turnkey kiosks and exhibit space are available for purchase by companies or organisations whose applications have been approved by SPI's Science & Technology Division and the NPE2009 Technology Committee.

Arkema Group will increase North American capacity for its Kynar-brand fluoropolymer by the end of 2009. The move will boost capacity by 10 percent at the Calvert City, Ky. Kynar plant. The Calvert City expansion will be a debottlenecking that will include installation of new machinery. Arkema also makes Kynar, a polyvinylidene fluoride, at a plant in Pierre-Bénite, France, and plans to start production in 2011 at a plant in Changshu, China, as well. The material's largest end market is as an architectural coating used over metal on building exteriors; it is also used in piping for the chemical processing industry and in specialised, high-performance moulded and extruded parts.
