Windsor trade fair to showcase mouldmaking
The Canadian Association of Mold Makers is pulling out all the stops for its November 18-19 Trade Fair. The two-day event, being held at Caesar's Windsor (Windsor, Ont.), has drawn a trade mission from Mexico, and will have executives from international companies such as Boeing and Volkswagen touring the aisles.
"The wake-up call for CAMM was a study a year or so back when we realised the world didn't know much about Windsor-made moulds, or about Canadian moulds generally," says CAMM president Dan Moynahan. "People finally grasped that we were well known to the Big Three in Detroit, but unknown elsewhere. This show is a way of bringing the world to Windsor, and showing them what we can do here."
CAMM has been expanding across Ontario this year, and membership has grown. It still runs a lean operation, with just one full-time staffer, office manager Diane Deslippe. It is given office space at St. Clair College, while the association supports college students through scholarships. Moynahan, who heads Platinum Tool Technologies (Oldcastle, Ont.) as a day-job, is not paid for his work for the association.
The show has over 100 companies lined up to exhibit in 10x10 ft booths, substantially more than the tabletop shows CAMM has sponsored in recent years. This includes mouldmakers as well as the supplier companies that were the backbone of the tabletop events.
A lot of one-on-on meetings between mouldmakers and customers have been lined up, and the dinners will feature celebrity speakers: neurologist-astronaut Roberta Bondar and hockey legend Paul Henderson. Following the show, there will also be plant tours.
CAMM is also pursuing other initiatives, such as making better use of Canadian overseas trade offices. Too often, Moynahan says, these are happy to help, but their knowledge of the tooling business is meagre.
A new CAMM initiative aims at obtaining funding to promote international business. The fact that Windsor MPP Sandra Pupatello was just made Ontario's Minister of International Trade and Investment should help in this.
"CAMM has quadrupled the number of hits its site gets," Moynahan says of the association's recent growth, "and business at some of the shops is showing signs of picking up. I think this trade show will take us to the next level."

Plasticiser feedstocks coming from down on the farm
Archer Daniels Midland Co. (Decatur, Ill.) and PolyOne Corp. (Cleveland, Ohio) are collaborating on the development of bio-based plasticisers to use in polymer formulations. The aim is to commercialise these plasticisers from corns and oilseeds. The global plasticiser market is worth $11-billion, and currently is almost exclusively based petroleum-based products.
"There is clear market interest in renewable technology as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based plasticiser offerings," says Dr. Cecil Chappelow, vice-president, innovation, sustainability, and chief innovation officer, PolyOne Corp. "We are confident that PolyOne's compounding expertise and global market reach, coupled with ADM's deep knowledge of agricultural-based chemistries and manufacturing techniques, will lead to a new generation of plasticisers and compounds for our customers and for the global polymer industry."
Paul Bloom, ADM ‘s director, chemical technology strategy, added, "This collaboration is an example of how ADM is working in concert with expert partners to identify opportunities to expand our product portfolio. When we find and commercialise new products from existing feedstock streams, we increase the value of our portfolio overall."
Globally, ADM has 240 processing plants converting corn, oilseeds, wheat and cocoa. Its annual sales last year were $70-billion. PolyOne is also a global operator, with annual sales of $2.7-billion.

Looking for a bargain
Possibly the largest-ever Canadian assets sale was held last week when the production equipment of Progressive Moulded Products was auctioned. The Ontario-based automotive moulder closed its doors in August, unable to continue competing under current market conditions. The event (pictured below) was handled by Infinity Asset Solutions Inc. (Concord, Ont.).
