CPIA offers international show space The Canadian Plastics Industry Association is once again providing the organisation and management of the Canada pavilion at NPE 2009, held June 22-26 next year in Chicago. It is offering all members of the associations making up the Canadian Machine Tool, Die & Mould Federation the same participation rates.
"The pavilion is somewhat smaller than in previous years," says Sally Damstra, director of international trade and shows. "This is a reflection of the market conditions that prevail at this time, and is also a reflection of the prime space that was available to us for selection at the NPE 2009 space draw early this year."
The South Hall is the largest exhibit hall at McCormick Place, where NPE is held, and because it houses the biggest machinery exhibits, also draws heavy traffic. Because of the limited spaces available and to meet deadlines established by NPE show management, interested companies are urged to complete and return the application/contract at the earliest date, and certainly in advance of the final deadline of this June 30.
CPIA is also planning to operate mini-pavilions at 2009 trade shows in Moscow, Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and New Delhi. Damstra says these may become rotating exhibit areas, depending on the level of enquiries received.
"It's an ambitious and outward looking program for markets that we know are growing rapidly and hold strong potential for Canadian companies," she says. www.cpia.ca
Chemicals sector monitors regulation The Canadian Chemical Producers' Association (CCPA) has released the highlights of its 2008 Scorecard that annually measures Ontario's competitiveness in the chemical industry against other North American jurisdictions. Ontario's chemical sector is the largest in Canada, with $22-billion of the national total of $48-billion.
"Ontario's economic performance within the sector has continued to slip this year and it is trailing key competing Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions," said Richard Paton, president and CEO of CCPA.
The CCPA has identified three major issues facing the sector:
The proposed Ontario toxic chemical legislation announced in November threatens to duplicate the Federal Chemical Management Plan (CMP). CMP has looked at the 23,000 chemicals used in Canada, determined which need to be further assessed and set rigorous timetables for these assessments and regulation where needed. The CCPA has recommended steps for Ontario to compliment the CMP and help manufacturers in the province meet its requirements;
The need for regulated buffer zones around manufacturing facilities and chemical plants that separate them from other residential and business properties. Currently buffer zones are contained in guidelines that are not enforceable and, therefore, not adequate in ensuring public safely;
The lengthy 12-18 months wait time for manufacturers to receive a Certificate of Approval to make structural changes to plants. The delay, significantly longer than in other jurisdictions, decreases a company's inclination to do business in Ontario and delays environmental improvements which would result in improved air quality and reduced greenhouse gases.
Conair and Rapid Granulator consolidate plants Sewickley Capital Inc. (Wilmington, Del) is bringing its two US manufacturing operations under one roof in Franklin, Pa. Rapid Granulator Inc., which has been based in Rockford, Ill, will produce its equipment in the same facility as auxiliary equipment supplier Conair. Having tested the conjoined production concept in China, International Plastics Equipment Group, the arm of Sewickley which owns both companies, has decided consolidation is a beneficial idea. Conjoined operations will also begin at Rapid's home base in Bredaryd, Sweden.
"Having initially tested the model in setting up IPEG manufacturing in China in 2007 to provide finished products to Conair, Rapid and Moditec, we are now taking the model global," said IPEG president Chris Keller. "We have proven the efficiency of common operations while at the same time maintaining the all-important commercial distinction between our brands." One factor affecting the move is Rapid's increase in business for larger units, which the Rockford plant cannot handle as well as the 180,000 sq ft plant in Franklin. Engineering and sales staff have been invited to join the Philadelphia operation, although some manufacturing and support positions will be cut. RGI president Kirk Winstead said the company is still finalising details with the company's 30-strong workforce on who will be moving.
Have you updated your listing in Plastics in Canada's Source Book?
This annual directory of the plastics industry is compiled during May, and you should already have had a form mailed out to you. If you've not seen yours, or need to make further changes to your listing, simply go to www.plasticsincanada.com, and click on the Update/Add Listing button on the right.
PLEASE NOTE: we make every effort to keep the Source Book a useful and relevant manual for the industry. This means that every year, we delete listings that have not been updated in the previous 24 months. So, it's advisable to check your listing anyway, to be sure it's up to date, and not at risk of being eliminated.
