Windsor tooling show gets boost from provincial government
The Ontario government is giving a boost to this year's tooling show in Windsor, Ont. The province's Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Sandra Pupatello, has approved a $100,000 grant to help the Canadian Association of Mold Makers, the show's organiser, bring in up to 50 buyers from non-traditional customers. These buyers will also tour local mould shops and meet their owners, and be offered a series of seminars.
"The mouldmaking sector provides the high-quality equipment and services that our manufacturing and automotive sectors depend on," Pupatello said. "This investment promotes the continued strength of our mould manufacturers, connecting them with new customers and developing new markets."
The Windsor area employs up to 14,000 people in its tool and die industry, including those in support sectors. But with the shrinkage of automotive manufacturing in and around the city, that number itself is probably reduced.
"There's a potential danger of this industry disappearing entirely from Windsor," says Cy McGrath, general manager of Progressive Components Canada, who is also chairman of the Canadian Machine Tool, Die & Mould Federation (CMTDMF). "We need to go beyond this dependence on automotive – people are realising that.
"They're also coming to realise that outside of the automotive business, not many people in the world know Windsor as a centre for mouldmaking at all, and we have to change that if we're going to survive. That means finding new industries to serve in new markets, whether it's medical, aerospace, or whoever can use the technical know-how here." The two-day trade show will be held on November 18 and 19 at the Caesar's Windsor Casino (formerly the Windsor Casino).

D-M-E offers tooling industry scholarships
Tooling supplies manufacturer D-M-E Co. is offering a Student Scholarship program to provide funds to students to encourage and support their future in the plastics industry. The program is offered in both the US and Canada.
A key finding in D-M-E's State of the Moldmaking Industry research last year was that, like many other industries, the tooling business will face a labour shortage as first- and second-generation experts retire. This is compounded by the lack of newcomers entering manufacturing professions.
Dave Lawrence, president of D-M-E, says that by offering educational support programs, the company is taking its position as an essential resource to customers and expanding it to the industry as a whole to help fill the increasing workforce gap in the marketplace.
"D-M-E is committed to advancing training and education within the plastics industry. We are very excited to offer these two programs to help the success of plastics industry employees today and in the future. As one of the preeminent leaders in the industry, it's both our obligation and in our best interest to help develop and groom tomorrow's mouldmaking and plastics industry experts."
D-M-E will be contributing $20,000 towards the D-M-E Co. Continuing Education Support and D-M-E Co. Student Scholarship Program, awarded in $1,000 increments. To be eligible for the Continuing Education Support scholarship, applicants must be employed by a current D-M-E customer; and training courses must be in the plastics industry, although related coursework that is non-plastic specific may be considered.
Interested parties must submit an application and provide additional materials. An application and complete list of materials are available at www.dme.net/education through July 30 this year.

US firm places biocomposite compounds order
JER Envirotech International Corp. (Vancouver) has received the first commercial order for its wood polymer biocomposite compound from Tulip Corp. (Milwaukee, Wis.). The purchase order concludes a six month R&D program with Tulip resulting in the development of a custom designed biocomposite master batch compound that Tulip can blend with various recycle streams used to produce interior and exterior molding, trim and industrial extruded profiles.
These products take advantage of the wood polymer biocomposite compound technology developed by JER Envirotech, and untapped scrap polymer resources within Tulip Corp. to create a new product line that contains up to 98 percent recycled content. This initial order targets delivery of compound to Tulip's Niagara Falls, NY facilities in late May to produce products for the summer construction market. Based on initial projections, JER anticipates producing Tulip's annual requirement of 400,000 – 500,000 lb of biocomposite compound from its facilities in Delta BC.

Plast-Ex Summit postponed
The first annual Plast-Ex Summit, scheduled for Thursday, May 22, at the Rogers Centre, is being postponed until a date later this year. Lower than expected attendance was given as the reason for the postponement.
"When we looked at the registration numbers, we realised that the summit would not live up to our expectations if we went ahead regardless," stated Nick Passingham, publisher of Plastics in Canada.
Added Serge Lavoie, president and CEO of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association, "The summit is an important event for the Canadian plastics industry and we want to ensure the first one is done right. May has turned out to be a very busy month for various meetings, seminars and other events in the industry. We're going to look for a date with less competition."
While the summit was the brainchild of Lavoie and Passingham, both point to the hard work of the special industry committee, led by Larry Pascucci of Negri Bossi, for having developed such an impressive program and line-up of speakers.
Organisers are working with confirmed speakers and sponsors to gauge their ability to reschedule to later this year. All registrants to the event will receive full refunds.

So, it's advisable to check your listing anyway, to be sure it's up to date, and not at risk of being eliminated.

DuPont adds manufacturing capabilities
DuPont is investing approximately $150-million to expand and upgrade manufacturing facilities in Europe, the US and Asia to meet strong demand for its specialty ethylene copolymers in photovoltaics, packaging and automotive markets, as well as for new infrastructure in emerging economies. This investment will result in over 200-million lb of additional capacity, enhanced capability of current facilities, and reduced energy consumption in operations.
Newly announced investments include:
Added capacity at Dordrecht, the Netherlands, to expand the global operations network for DuPont Fusabond modifiers and DuPont Bynel adhesive resins and to serve the European market. The new capacity is expected to be online in 2009.
Enhanced capabilities for DuPont Surlyn ionomer resin and Vamac ethylene acrylic elastomers from DuPont Performance Elastomers and upgrades to improve energy efficiency at DuPont's Sabine operation in Orange, Tex. These will be operational in 2008 and 2009.
Production efficiency investments at the Victoria, Tex., facility for DuPont Elvax ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) products. These will be operational in 2008 and 2009.
As previously announced, DuPont will construct an EVA facility near Beijing, China, with its joint venture partner, Sinopec. The facility, the first EVA manufacturing operation for DuPont in China, will supply a broad range of EVA products, thus strengthening DuPont's position in the world's fastest growing EVA market. The facility will begin operations in 2009.

Ulrich Reifenhäuser, managing partner of Reifenhäuser GmbH & Co. KG Maschinenfabrik and deputy chairman of the Association for Plastics and Rubber Machinery within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), will again be the chairman of the exhibitor council. His deputy will be Dr. Rainer Büschl, head of market communications for plastics at BASF AG who has also been appointed chairman of the concept committee. A recent North American sales and marketing agreement joins Clariant Masterbatches' Enigma-reflections effects technology with ClearTint transparent colourants for PP from Milliken & Co. It also makes these masterbatches available even in small lot sizes. Clariant has been marketing ClearTint masterbatches in Latin America since 2005. The Milliken colourants will be offered under the Enigma brand name in a wide range of transparent colours and in combination with reflective special effects. These include iridescent pearls and Spectrachrome, a multicolour flip technology incorporating complementary or contrasting colour particles.
