Ariostea opens Canadian sales office
A new company has entered the field of raw materials handling in Canada. Italian-based Ariostea Systems North America offers silos, blenders and other equipment for moving, sifting and mixing resins. Running the operation as general manager is Zoran Romic, who has a dozen years of experience in the plastics processing sector.
"We have had a few projects in Canada, and in the US," he says. "The parent company is in Italy, and breaking into this market is part of its business plan."
For now, it is offering sales and service from its offices at 83 Whitmore Rd., Woodbridge, Ont., L4L 6E3. Romic can be reached at 416-786-0276 or 9895romic@rogers.com.

Basics of Plastics registration now open
Registration is now open for the Basics of Plastics, a primer in what the plastics industry and processing are all about. This one-day event, aimed at people new to the industry, or who need to round out their grasp of the industry, is being held at the Rogers Campus in Brampton, Ont., on April 10.
It is being presented by Plastics in Canada magazine in conjunction with The Plastics Touchpoint Group (Thornhill, Ont.). PTG is a consultancy and teaching organisation headed by Paul Waller, who has 30 years' experience in plastics processing, machinery sales and in training workers around the world to use plastics technologies.
The seminar includes an industry overview, an outline of polymer chemistry for non-chemists, a look at each of the main plastics processes used today, and current environmental issues. Attendees will receive a book-format copy of course materials to keep. Lunch and coffee breaks are included in the fee, which is just $195.
A registration form and the full program can be found at www.plasticsincanada.com, at the top of the home page.

Valle Foam gets boost for bio-based polyol work
The Ontario BioAuto Council has given a grant of $500,000 to Valle Foam Industries Inc. (Brampton, Ont.) to aid in the commercialisation of the company's new BioPlush product line. Valle Foam manufactures slab stock polyurethane foams for the furniture, bedding, packaging, carpet and children's toy industries, and has committed to replacing up to 25 percent of its petroleum-based polyols with polyols derived from natural plant-based oils such as soybean.
Bio-based polyols have seen significant growth in the last two years, largely because of the increasing price of crude oil, the traditional source for polyols.
"The Council is excited over its contribution to Valle Foam as the shift in production at Valle Foam signals a growing market demand for bio-based materials," says Craig Crawford, CEO of the Ontario BioAuto Council. "And a growing market means new opportunities for Ontario companies and the province's natural resource sectors."
The Ontario BioAuto Council is a not-for-profit organisation working to link Ontario's agriculture and forestry sectors to chemical and plastics processors and advanced manufacturers to produce materials and chemicals from biological feedstocks. Its commercialisation fund targets near market-ready innovations that will lead to the production of basic bio-plastic and bio-composite materials, for use in the manufacture of automotive parts, furniture, construction materials and other consumer and industrial products.

Mold-Masters shifting US operation
Mold-Masters is moving its US facility from South Carolina to a new service centre in Michigan.
"Our customers asked for a service centre which would provide faster response times and part of that means closer proximity to our greatest concentration of customers," said Patrick Bennett, executive vice-president. "The South Carolina facility we felt did not address that need as well as was required to support our future growth."
The new Michigan location provides Mold-Masters with a logistical advantage enabling 24/7 service and parts availability to our customers. Further, we will be able to provide superior support to this facility from our service teams and manufacturing facilities in Georgetown, Ontario."

A new industry group for the Quebec plastics industry is planning its initial meeting at the Hôtel Universelle, Drummondville Que., on Wednesday, April 9, from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm. A faction of processors broke away from the Quebec section of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association at the start of the year, complaining that progress towards autonomy was not happening fast enough. The group is coordinated by Bernard Poitras, president of Plastiques Micron.
