Flame retardant okayed for use in plasticss
The federal government will continue to permit use of decabromodiphenyl ether (“deca”) as a flame retardant in plastics. This was one of 200 chemicals examined by Environment Canada and Health Canada for toxicity, to decide if they should be regulated. Its production within Canada will not be permitted, but since there are no production sites here, and none planned, this is not a contentious issue in the ruling.
Deca is used in plastic housings, wiring and other polymer products. The ruling, while allowing continued deca use, also seeks voluntary minimising of levels of it finding their way into the environment. Federal agencies will also look to see if there is a need for further controls on the chemical, depending on levels of exposure to Canadians and the environment.

Dow buys Rohm & Haas
Dow Chemical Co. (Midland, Mich.) is buying Rohm & Haas Co., the US-based specialty chemicals producer, in a deal worth $19-billion. The company describes the purchase as “a pivotal point in Dow´s transformation,” in which it is paying $78 per share. The transaction is backed by Warren Buffett´s Berkshire Hathaway Group and the Kuwait Investment Authority, with debt financing supplied by Citi, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.
Dow has been moving out of commodity plastics and into less cyclical sectors. Most of its commodity plastics business is now invested in a joint venture with PIC of Kuwait.
Dow is already a major additives supplier, making biocides, crosslinkers, lubricants, polymer modifiers. antistats and blowing agents.
Rohm & Haas’s additives lineup includes its widely used acrylic-based impact modifiers and process aids for vinyl and other plastics, heat stabilizers and lubricants for vinyl, specialty waxes, plasticizers and anti-microbial agents. The Philadelphia-based firm has an extensive polymers profile but most are aimed at specialty applications such as coatings and other industrial uses. It exited the acrylic sheet business 10 years ago. www.dow.com

Acrylic marks 75th birthday
Plexiglas acrylic has been used by designers and engineers since its commercialisation in 1933 for everything from automobiles and airplanes to office buildings and consumer goods. In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of this brand of acrylic, Jack Reilly (pictured left), Altuglas International's R&D manager, and Gary Hall, senior staff technician, presented this icon, “Plexiglas King of G Cell Cast Acrylic Sheet”, to Patrick Shea (at right), senior archivist of the Chemical Heritage Foundation (Philadelphia, Pa.)
The image, developed to promote Plexiglas G cell cast acrylic sheet at a national sign industry exposition in 1970, will be housed permanently at CHF headquarters in Philadelphia, adjacent to Independence National Historic Park. A new museum at CHF scheduled to open this fall will maintain a collection of materials that document the history and heritage of the chemical sciences and technologies.

Cargill to open bio-polyols plant
Cargill Inc. (Minneapolis) has broken ground on a $22-million plant for BiOH-brand polyols in Chicago. The company says this facility, expected to be operational in November, will be the first world-scale bio-based polyols plant. It will produce Cargill's BiOH soybean-based polyols, which are designed to replace petroleum-based chemicals traditionally used for polyurethane products such as flexible foam.
Cargill said in a news release that BiOH polyols “provide a responsible choice in raw materials for furniture cushioning, bedding foams, automotive seats, and building insulation.” The firm also stated that manufacturing BiOH polyols results in 36 percent less in global-warming emissions and needs 61 percent less non-renewable energy than traditional petroleum-based polyols. It claims that for every million lb of BiOH polyols that replace petroleum polyols, 2,200 barrels of crude oil are saved.
The company says BiOH polyols can deliver unique performance benefits when used in flexible foam applications, including consistent product quality, low odour and load-bearing capabilities.
