The Basics of Plastics
The first in our series of day long seminars is now finalized for April 10th at the Rogers Campus in Brampton. It is designed to give a complete introduction to plastic processing, including materials, moulds, moulding and extrusion etc. The moderator is Paul Waller (President Plastics Touchpoint Group). The full day is only $195.00 (includes lunch). The registration and complete agenda can be viewed by clicking https://www.exporeg.com/plastics2008/
Space is limited to 45 attendees so book now to guarantee your place.

Industry battles bisphenol-A scares
The safety of bisphenol-A (BPA), a primary feedstock in polycarbonate and epoxies, has become a favourite target of certain environmentalist groups, the way PVC became one in the 1990s. The industry has had to mobilise to hit back against suspect or small scale studies of levels of bisphenol-A that are being touted as signs of dangerous levels of toxicity.
The American Chemistry Council (ACC), the work of which is supported by the Canadian Plastics Industry Association, believes the "Toxic Baby Bottle" report issued this month by environmental groups in the U.S. and Canada provides no new relevant information regarding the safety of BPA.
"Migration data are comparable to what has been reported elsewhere and reviewed as part of comprehensive safety evaluations conducted by government bodies worldwide; all of these evaluations support the conclusion that polycarbonate bottles can continue to be safely used," ACC says in its statement. "Additionally, recent studies from several European research groups with expertise in testing the safety of consumer products, like baby bottles, support the conclusion that bisphenol A is not a risk to human health at the extremely low levels to which consumers might be exposed. In contrast, the test conditions used in the new reports, which involve heating bottles at 80 deg C (176 deg F) for 24 hours, are of little relevance as baby bottles are not used under these extreme conditions."
Polycarbonate baby bottles, it adds, have a decades-long safety track record, supported by an extensive body of scientific evidence that has been evaluated by many independent scientific and government bodies worldwide.

NPE, ANTEC combine as one event
NPE2009 will combine with the Society of Plastics Engineers' annual technical conference, ANTEC. NPE2009 is held from June 22 through June 26 next year at Chicago's McCormick Place.
SPE executive director Susan Oderwald says that three months ago, SPE and the Society of the Plastic Industry, which owns NPE, reported plans for SPE to present a "massive" technical conference at the show.
"The program to be organised by SPE at NPE2009 will in fact be ANTEC itself, with absolutely all of the technical presentations, seminars, workshops, and forums that annually attract plastics professionals from around the world," she adds. "The hundreds of events on our program will add a wealth of knowledge and discovery to what is already present on the exhibit floor, creating a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to interact with our industry's sales and marketing professionals."
At ANTEC 2007, more than 3,500 engineers, scientists, technicians, technical sales and service personnel, industry managers, and academic specialists attended 650 presentations of peer-reviewed papers. This year's ANTEC 2008 will take place May 4 through 8 in Milwaukee, Wis., at the Midwest Express Center.
SPI expects NPE2009 to attract 2,000 exhibiting companies and 75,000 visitors from well over 100 countries.
In addition to ANTEC, visitors to NPE2009 will have access to an extensive educational program developed by SPI and focusing on business and management issues, multi-exhibitor pavilions for emerging technologies and special processing sectors, a theatre for new-product demonstrations, and a design competition. ANTEC 2009 will take place in the new McCormick West building, which includes extensive, state-of-the-art meeting facilities. Completed in mid-2007, the building has 250,000 sq ft (23,200 sq M) of meeting space divided among 61 rooms, plus 470,000 sq ft (43,700 sq M) of gross
exhibition space.
