Last chance to register for Basics of Plastics
It's close to the close-off point for registration to the Basics of Plastics seminar. This one-day event, co-presented by Plastics in Canada magazine and The Plastics Touchpoint Group (Thornhill, Ont.), is your chance to ask all those questions about plastics manufacturing that you could never get answers to before.
The one-day seminar, offered at the low price of $195 per person, covers all the main processes used in the industry, the basic elements of polymer chemistry, and current environmental issues.
Full details of the program are available at www.exporeg.com/plastics2008.

Plast-Ex Summit draws more speakers
The lineup of speakers for the Plast-Ex Summit continues to expand. This event, slated for the Rogers Center in Toronto on May 22, will examine at the critical issues facing the plastics industry at the present time, and possible solutions to them.
New on the roster is Edmonton MP James Rajotte, who is chairman of the House of Commons standing committee on industry, science & technology. He will address the challenges facing implementation of new technologies.
The master of ceremonies for the day is TV journalist Dale Goldhawk, who will moderate two panel discussions that will examine macromanufacturing issues, and the factors specifically affecting plastics.
Other speakers include David Birkby, president of PET blow moulder Westbridge Containers in Calgary; Paul Clark, president of VisionGain Consulting Ltd., and former vice-president, research & technology, NOVA Chemicals Corp.; Gerry Fedchun, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association; Jayson Myers president of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, Canada's largest industry and trade association; Brian Read, president of structural foam moulder Horizon Plastics, Cobourg, Ont.; and Dr. Gord Surgeoner, president, Ontario Agri-Food Technologies.
The day's program includes lunch, dinner, a networking session and a Blue Jays baseball game, seen from the Rogers private box.

CAMM booth makes the rounds.
A diversification study commissioned last year by the Essex-Windsor Development Commission found something interesting: outside of Canada, nobody seems to know Windsor is a mouldmaking centre. One outcome of this has been that the Canadian Association of Mold Makers, which is based in Windsor, has a new trade-show booth that has been making the rounds, and getting the attention Windsor needs.
"When we asked people in Europe where Canada makes moulds, they were able to name Toronto, Montreal, and even Calgary," says Diane Deslippe, administrator with CAMM in Windsor, Ont. "They didn't know about Windsor at all, even though it has such a high concentration of toolmaking firms."
The booth, she says, has helped resolve that. Enquiries at recent US trade shows, in Charlotte, NC, or the Plastec West show in California, saw double the normal amount of traffic. It will appear this month at Mold Expo in Novi, Mich., and also at Mexico City's Plastimagen show.

Expoplast anchors Quebec plastics celebration
The recent space-draw for Expoplast 2008 produce bookings virtually equalling those for the 2005 show. More than 70 per cent of those booking had been at the previous show, according to show manager Tom Sockett.
"The Expoplast 2008 space draw was an extremely strong result that bodes well for the industry and the event," he says. "Companies from across Canada, North America and internationally will be exhibiting in this important industry event, bringing advanced products, industry knowledge and expertise."
Expoplast 2008, held on October 20 and 21 at Montreal's Palais des Congres, will be the centrepiece of a five day industry celebration, starting on October 18th with the ACIP Gala and awards dinner, and finishing on the 22nd with the last day of the APAC international business development program.
The show will feature a Pavilion for Composites, a technical conference organised by the Society of Plastics Engineers' Quebec section, a showcase of Quebec Excellence and Achievement and other features.
"Knowledge will be king at Expoplast," Sockett says. "Right from the start our event advisory committee realised that what our attendees and the industry really need is knowledge, information they can utilise going forward and inform their overall business decisions."
As one reflection of this, Expoplast 2008 will include the Knowledge Network, a program linking all information resources at the event. This will make it easy for attendees to organise their visit and access everything available, whether it's the SPE conference, the Consultants' Corner, or exhibitor booths.

MIR name survives through purchase
MIR SpA (Brescia, Italy) one of Italy's oldest builders of injection moulding presses, has been sold for 9.6 million euros ($15-million) by HT Italy SpA. The buyer, which acquired MIR at auction, is associated with Ningbo Haitian Group Ltd., of China.
MIR became insolvent in December 2006. HT Italy was the sole bidder for the name and assets. A dispute over payments to former employees was one reason cited for the lack of interest among other firms. A scant dozen employees will be retained by HT Italy, which is moving its own operations into MIR's 300,000 sq ft plant in Brescia.
Low-cost toggle machines, rubber moulding presses, and large tonnage machines will continue to be offered under the MIR brand-name.

Invista (Wichita, Kan.) has filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York seeking damages from DuPont Co. arising from alleged safety and environmental noncompliance issues during the period DuPont owned certain Invista sites. Invista is seeking $800-million in compensatory damages plus additional punitive damages. Koch Industries Inc., Invista´s parent, purchased the polymers and fibres business from DuPont for US$4.2-billion in 2004. Invista states it is facing capital expenditures in the range of $300-million to $450-million to meet a nearly final agreement between itself and US federal and state authorities. DuPont, in its response, states Invista's allegations "lack merit and cannot be supported by evidence or the law."
