Basics of Plastics seminar draws strong response
The first Basics of Plastics seminar was presented last Thursday by Plastics in Canada magazine in conjunction with the Plastics Touchpoint Group (Thornhill, Ont.). The seminar drew 30 attendees to learn the elements of plastics materials and their applications, as well as an outline of the primary processes the industry uses.
Seminar leader Paul Waller, president of the Plastics Touchpoint Group, presented the various sections of the day's program, which was held at the Rogers campus in Brampton, Ont. The photo shows Paul outlining the film extrusion process.
As a result of the strongly positive feedback from those who attended, the one-day Basics of Plastics seminar will be repeated this fall. Watch this enewsletter for the announcement of the date.

Plast-Ex Summit lineup broadens
Economist Bill Empey has joined the lineup of speakers for the Plast-Ex Summit, being held on May 22 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Summit, a high-level conference aimed at senior management, aims to examine the current range of challenges facing the plastics industry in Canada, and the opportunities the new business landscape presents.
Empey, who is managing partner with consultancy Prism Economics and Analysis in Toronto, began working for what was then the Society of the Plastics Industry of Canada in 1988. His initial project was done on the impact on the industry of the Free Trade Agreement. He has since performed several management studies, including one that led to the formation of the Canadian Plastics Sector Council.
The Summit includes networking opportunities, dinner and lunch, and a Blue Jays baseball game. The registration form is now available online, at www.plastexsummit.ca

Bill Empey

Bill began working with the plastics industry in l988 when he was asked by Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) to evaluate the impact of the Canada – U.S. Free Trade Agreement. Since that time Bill has completed many assignments for the industry. Much of his work focuses on labour markets, human resources and related issues. Bill works with the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) and the Canadian Plastics Sector Council (CPSC) tracking market conditions and assessing the impact of policy.

Exatec expands PC glazing facility
Polycarbonate glazing systems supplier Exatec (Wixom, Mich.) has broadened the range of coating technologies it offers. Exatec, which is owned by SABIC Innovative Plastics (Pittsfield, Mass.), is expanding is main facility in Wixom to offer enhanced process development and prototype capabilities, notably for panoramic roof systems. The expansion includes a full-scale plasma system for continuously coating PC windows, an upgraded wet coating lab, and a new Engel injection moulding press.
Exatec was founded in 1988 as a 50-50 joint venture between GE Plastics, which SABIC bought last year, and Bayer MaterialScience. Subsequently, GE bought Bayer's share, and SABIC IP now owns the entire venture.

Quebec plastics firms form new federation
Quebec plastics companies have a new organisation. The Federation of Plastics Businesses and Composites Alliance (FEPAC) was formed at a meeting at the Hôtel Universelle, Drummondville, Que., on April 9, when 50 firms active in the industry voted to join.
The formal launch of FEPAC will be in June, with the first annual meeting slated for November. The goal, according to Bernard Poitras of Plastique Micron, the group's moving spirit, is to build up to include 75 per cent of the province's plastics industry, a membership level which would exceed that of any other industry group in the industry nationwide.
The bulk of the members are plastics processors. A few had quit the Quebec division of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association earlier this year, complaining that a move towards autonomy was happening too slowly. The CPIA board had agreed to such autonomy, but wanted the process to occur in agreed upon stages.
