DuPont sells Liqui-Box businesses
DuPont Liquid Packaging Systems, which markets products under the trade-name Liqui-Box, is selling its performance films businesses. This includes the Sclairfilm and Dartek operations, and a Whitby, Ont., packaging plant.
The buyer is Exopack Performance Films Inc. (Spartanburg, SC). Exopack is part of Sun Capital Partners, Inc., a private investment firm located in Boca Raton, Fla.
The transaction was expected to close this November, subject to regulatory approval. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The performance films operations focus on the production of Dartek nylon 6,6 cast film, a barrier film, and the Sclairfilm family of sealant films. These products are manufactured at the Whitby facility and used in a variety of packaging and industrial applications.
As part of the sale, DuPont Liquid Packaging Systems is entering into a long-term supply agreement with Exopack for films and laminates produced at Whitby site that are used in its liquid packaging systems business. Exopack will offer employment to all employees involved in the Whitby operations including poly, nylon, finishing, laminations and manufacturing support, as well as sales and sales support for the Sclairfilm and Dartek businesses.

Industry veterans gather to recall old times
Quebec plastics pioneers met recently near Montreal for a reunion. The group consists of long-serving executives and other industry members.
US industry sees changing trade balance
The disparity between the greenback and the loonie is hurting Canada, but it boosted US exports for the first eight months of 2007. The Society of the Plastics Industry (Washington, DC) says the plastics industry there had a surplus of US$6.9-billion over that period, an 11.7 per cent increase over the rate in 2006.
Canada remains the US largest source for American imports, at 33 per cent of the total market. China is second, with 20 per cent. Canada is also the principal supplier of US resin, machinery and moulds.
Overall, imports were down 2.3 per cent, according to SPI president Bill Carteaux.
However, the main gains were made by resin producers, not other sectors. There was a $4.7-billion trade deficit in manufactured plastics products, and the machinery segment racked up an $896 million deficit. Mouldmaking notched up a $721-million trade deficit
By comparison, plastics exports in 2006 grew by 12.3 per cent over 2005 to $43.4-billion, while imports last year grew by 7.5 per cent to $37.6-billion, which gave a surplus of $5.8 billion. That was up almost 58 per cent from 2005's surplus of $3.7 billion.
Carteaux drew his strongest encouragement from the trade deficit in plastics products, which levelled off from 2005 to 2006, and was projected to drop to $4.3-billion over the course of 2007.
SPI has also published its latest Global Business Trends Report. This fills in some of the less promising aspects of the picture, wherein the trade balance in resins drops from surplus status to an $872-million deficit, while the deficit in moulded and extruded products grows to $29.4 billion.
As previously noted at an SPI conference during K 2007, through 2006 Canada and Mexico remained equal with each other as the US' largest markets for resins, products, machines and tooling, each accounting for 24 per cent of US exports, while China holds third place with six per cent.

BE sells 11-layer line
Brampton Engineering (Brampton, Ont.) has signed a deal for its first-ever 11-layer blown film line. The customer was not identified.
"Our competitors are now trying to develop an efficient and flexible nine-layer die to compete with our SCD-3," said BE's president, Bud Smith, "but no other machine manufacturer can match our experience and performance in the seven eight, nine and 10-layer market. We have approximately 75 seven to 10 layer lines producing film in the global marketplace, of which 15 are nine-layer and two 10-layer."
