K show packs 'em in
With record-breaking visitor attendance reported for the first few days, K 2007 in Dusseldorf, Germany, was the place to be in the past two weeks. A total of 3,000 companies from around the world came to show their latest technology, unveil new machinery and raw materials, and boast of their latest deals.
Among them was Brampton Engineering (Brampton, Ont.) which signed a deal for its first-ever 11-layer blown film line. The customer was not identified.
"Our competitors are now trying to develop an efficient and flexible nine-layer die to compete with our SCD-3," said BE's president, Bud Smith, "but no other machine manufacturer can match our experience and performance in the seven eight, nine and 10-layer market. We have approximately 75 seven to 10 layer lines producing film in the global marketplace, of which 15 are nine-layer and two 10-layer."
Ryka Molds Inc. (Mississauga, Ont.) announced a new arrangement with Australia's Ritemp Technologies Pty. Ltd. to use Ritemp mould cooling technology on its blow moulds. Launched in North America at NPE 2006, Ritemp simplifies the mould cooling circuit and reduces power and water consumption, replacing conventional cooling circuits with sealed cooling chambers that completely envelop the mould's working surfaces.
And there is new representation for Arburg injection moulding machines in Canada. A deal between Dier International (Unionville, Ont.) and D Cube (Montreal) means the two agencies jointly handle products manufactured by Motan Inc., Rapid Inc., Thermal Care Inc., Arburg Inc., and Erema. D Cube will manage sales in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, while Dier International will handle Arburg and Erema in Ontario, and continue selling the other brands across Canada except in D Cube's sales territory.
Full reports on announcements and new technical developments from K 2007 will be featured in our November print edition.

SMS sells its last Battenfeld unit
After postponing its press conference twice at K 2007, film machinery manufacturer Battenfeld Gloucester Engineering Co. (Gloucester, Mass.) was finally ready to announce this week that it has new owners. And it is reverting to its old name, Gloucester Engineering Co. Inc.
Mousam Ventures, a private equity firm, has joined forces with eight Gloucester managers to buy the company from Germany's SMS, which in the 1990s bought all the Battenfeld companies. The film machinery producer was the last component of that buyout that SMS retained.
John Sharood is now chairman of Gloucester Engineering, and Dick Murphy is vice-chairman. President is Carl Johnson, who was CEO of Battenfeld Gloucester, a company he joined in 1995. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Gloucester Engineering has 305 employees, and generates annual sales of about C$95-million.
In 2002, Sharood and Murphy led a management buyout of EGS Gauging Systems Inc. from Eurotherm International Inc. Sharood had worked at Eurotherm International, and had a background in industrial controls at several companies, including GE Power Controls. Murphy was a co-founder of Aeonic Systems, which became Eurotherm Gauging, then finally EGS. The two sold EGS Gauging last year to Thermo Electron Corp., after which they started Mousam Ventures, with Gloucester Engineering being their first acquisition. Sharood says Mousam Ventures is more like an operating company than a venture capital firm, and has no plans to re-sell Gloucester Engineering at a later date.

IPL adds capacity in two plants
IPL Inc. (St-Damien, Que.) is expanding capabilities at two of its plants. It is adding a second 3,500-ton injection press at its headquarters, and putting in three presses at its facility in Edmundston, NB. This equipment will be mainly used to meet increased demand for IPL's waste management products, most notably the 360-litre and 240-litre wheeled carts.
The investment in St-Damien is worth $4.2-million and will create about 10 new full-time jobs. In Edmundston, $1.2-million is being spent, one of the presses adding capacity and the other two replacing older machines.
"The addition of this new equipment highlights the success garnered by our new, highly technical, waste management products," says Serge Bragdon, president and CEO. "IPL is a leader in the growing market for environmental products. This investment ensures that we will be able to respond more rapidly and accurately to any request that would result from new business opportunities stemming from our innovative technical solutions."
