K show booked solid

The trade fairgrounds at Dusseldorf are huge, as anyone who's been there knows, and construction of a new hall this year has added 86,000 sq ft to the site. Despite this, the world's biggest plastics show, which takes place from October 24 to 31, is booked solid.
The showgrounds include 1.8-million sq ft of exhibit space, serviced by on-site transit, plus moving walkways connecting some halls.
Exhibitor Council chairman Ulrich Reifenhauser says market conditions, at least in most parts of the world, bode well for the show.
"Not only the economic climate has improved," he says, "but the investment backlog of the last two years is filling order books now. Investors' greater readiness to make purchases is unmistakable and is mainly directed at replacement and expansion measures."
The Canadian Pavilion, organised by the Canadian Plastics Industry Association, is in Hall 11, booth F-40. In total, there will be about 2,900 exhibitors from 57 different countries.

Tool and diemakers get provincial boost
The Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has committed $300,000 for the Windsor-Essex Region to help it deal with urgent trade issues. Of this, $200,000 is directed exclusively at the mould, tool and diemaking sector.
The disbursement of these funds will be controlled at the grass roots level by the Windsor-Essex Development Commission, which has formed a committee of association and industry representatives to decide how these funds will be used.
Another item that came out of the round table discussions with the Minister, Sandra Pupatello, is a commitment to assist in developing the case for lien legislation in Ontario. She will also help industry representatives meet with the appropriate government officials to present their case.
Horst Schmidt, president of the Canadian Tooling & Machining Association, says he hopes this commitment will bring in this legislation in Ontario much sooner than was anticipated.

Saudi Basic Industries buys GE Plastics
Saudi Basic Industries has confirmed rumours that the company is buying GE Plastics. The cost? US$11.6-billion.
This is simply the latest acquisition for SABIC, which traditionally focused on polyolefins it made from the abundant natural gas supplies in Saudi Arabia.
In the past four years, SABIC has expanded beyond commodity materials. It purchased DSM Petrochemicals' business in Europe and the Huntsman Petrochemicals business in the UK. In each case, existing management teams continued to manage the business, and have been given SABIC's support to implement various investment and growth initiatives. The buyer's style, clearly, is to avoid any controversy about its geographical origins affecting corporate policies or business practices.
Mohamed Al-Mady, vice-chairman and CEO of SABIC, commented, "This acquisition represents another important step in SABIC's growth and diversification to become one of the world's leading manufacturing companies. This business is complementary to our existing business without any overlaps. SABIC's intention is to grow the business globally.
"SABIC is well-positioned to do this, while adding high-performance plastics to the product range SABIC currently offers to customers."

Matrix Packaging bought by Sonoco
Sonoco Products Co. (Hartsville, SC) is buying custom blow moulder Matrix Packaging Inc. (Mississauga, Ont.) for $230-million in cash. If approved by regulators, the deal will allow Sonoco to expand into new markets, including personal care, household chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Matrix' CEO Pushminder Judge will join Sonoco's management committee, though his co-founder Graeme Malloch is leaving the company.
The purchase affects six blow moulding plants in Canada and the US. Sonoco has one blow molding facility, in Wausau, Wis., and is to open another in Columbus, Ohio, by year-end.
Harris DeLoach Jr., Sonoco's CEO, said in a news release, "Matrix has grown rapidly in just 15 years by investing in state-of-the-art technology and advanced equipment that provide its customers with innovation, flexibility and quality. By maintaining Matrix' talented management team, we expect to be able to continue to aggressively grow this business."
The company was started in 1992, and has 860 workers. Sonoco expects it to contribute $154-million in annual sales.

Regional conferences planned
The Atlantic Canada Plastics Industry Symposium is coming up on June 27 and 28 in Rocky Harbour, Nfld. Organised through the Centre for Plastics Development (Pasadena, Nfld.) this will be a horizontal look at the plastics industry in the region.
There will be a strong focus on recycling and environmental issues, including biodegradable and compostable materials. More information is available from venture.centre@nf.sympatico.ca.
In addition, an information session for the composites industry is planned for June 25 in Kelowna, BC. The purpose of the session is to make companies in this sector aware of the research expertise available in Canada and how they can access this. Information will be given on the composite technical expertise that is available within some of the key research institutes and other organisations across Canada. Participants will include the National Research Council's Industrial Materials Institute (IMI) and its Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre, Manitoba's Composites Innovation Centre, and the University of BC Composites Group.

D-M-E consolidates MRO business
D-M-E Co. (Madison Hts., Mich.) is consolidating its maintenance, repair and operating supply (MRO) businesses under the one name, D-M-E Molding Supplies. The re-branding move brings Northern Supply, Nickerson and OHS under a single name with one catalogue.
"D-M-E Molding Supplies further advances our commitment to global product standardisation," said Dave Lawrence, D-M-E's president. "The comprehensive catalogue allows us to deliver high-quality products quicker than ever before, improving our ability to serve our customers every step of the way."
The new catalogue will be available mid-June, with updated versions available every 12 to 18 months versus the current intervals of two to three years. Part number reference charts will smooth the transition for existing customers.
