SME, CME form alliance
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (Dearborn, Mich.) and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (Ottawa) have begun an alliance. Its aim is to strengthen the competitive skills, knowledge and innovation capabilities of the Canadian manufacturing community through joint efforts in membership development, event planning, professional and workforce development activities and programs.
Together, the organisations will collaborate on joint membership packages, industry events, workforce development initiatives, and creating awareness with the public that manufacturing is a critical part of the economy and a rewarding career choice.
F. Brian Holmes, SME's president, says, "I look forward to the opportunities the alliance brings, because both organisations are looking for the same result: a stronger manufacturing sector through technology and education of the current and future
workforce."
Holmes is vice-president of operations at Columbia Plastics (Surrey, BC). His company is also a member of CME.
Adds CME president and CEO Perrin Beatty, "Canada's manufacturers face unprecedented challenges resulting from the high dollar, growing competition from low-wage countries, skills shortages, and a border that continues to get more sticky, costly and thick," says. "Manufacturing is a vital part of our country's economy, and it is essential that our manufacturers be armed with the tools they need to compete successfully in world markets. Our new partnership will supply some of those tools and help to strengthen Canada's industrial base." The alliance with CME is part of SME's larger initiative to bring manufacturing education and workforce development resources deeper into Canada, supporting the underserved manufacturing communities throughout the nation. To support this initiative, SME acquired seven manufacturing trade shows in Canada, including the Western Manufacturing Technology Show and Weld Expo, which ran from June 19 – 21 in Edmonton.

StackTeck adds capacity
StackTeck (Brampton, Ont.) has grown its business over 50 per cent in the past five years, and it is buying new capital equipment to meet the demands placed on it. President and CEO Randy Yakimishyn says this will increase capacity and reduce lead times further. The new equipment already installed includes an additional high speed milling machine, to augment StackTeck's existing high speed milling capacity, a key technology for fast, high precision cutting of complex geometries. Another recent addition is a new wire EDM machine that uses heat technology software to significantly increase cutting rates. StackTeck has also invested in streamlining the communication link between engineering and manufacturing. Multiple stations have been added on the plant floor, to allow viewing and use of CAD 3-D models.

Does your plant meet the law?
If your plant isn't up to scratch in its safety standards, watch out. The Ontario Ministry of Environment has informed the Canadian Plastics Industry Association that it plans to make unannounced inspections at about 180 plastic processors between now and the end of 2007. The focus will be companies making plastic bags, PS foam, bottles, plumbing fixtures and those in the Ministry's category 326198, 'All other plastic products not otherwise specified.'
This move is a follow-up to 78 audits of plastic processors, which MOE undertook in 2005, when it found only seven to be fully compliant. The most typical shortfalls in 2005 were: no Certificate of Approval for discharge to air; waste remaining on site longer than 90 days, without MOE being notified; missing Regulation 347 waste manifests; and not meeting the Three Rs requirements of Regulations 102 and 104.
The CPIA has been advocating for compliance support for plastics processors. In response, the Ontario Government Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement group, part of the Ministry of Labour, has developed a compliance website, specifically for the plastics sector. This had design input from a CPIA working group, to make the data as accessible as possible to plastics processors. This went live last month, and can be accessed at www.serviceontario.ca/plastics.
This doesn't just cover labour issues, but covers subjects such as finance, employment standards and the environment for example. CPIA is urging all plastic processors to visit this site, which can help them assess their level of compliance, and address any shortfalls prior to any unannounced audit from an MOE inspector.

Biota folds bio-bottles business
Biota Brands of America Inc. (Telluride, Col.) which set out to produce biodegradable, compostable water bottles, has shut its plant and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company has been making the bottles by a stretch blow process in Ouray, Col. and the Biota water has been sold in selected supermarkets and health-food stores.
Biota used polylactic acid (PLA) made by NatureWorks LLC, and worked on preforms with Husky Injection Molding Systems (Bolton, Ont.) and with stretch-blow moulding machinery supplier SIG Corpoplast to perfect the bottles. It currently owes US$8.8-million to its major creditor, UPS Capital Business Credit (Hartford, Conn.) This company launched a foreclosure action, but Biota filed for protection from creditors in April, before the plant could be foreclosed and sold.
Biota has listed US$10.5-million in liabilities and $5.3-million in assets. UPS Capital Business Credit plans to try proceeding with its foreclosure, regardless of the Chapter 1l ruling.
