  From Plastics in Canada

It's show-time
– are you ready?

Plastics in Canada is producing the only official Showguide for Plast-Ex 2007, and we also have a major Show Preview in our April issue, which closes on March 7. Our Showguide is the sole one being distributed to all showgoers at each of the show's entrances.
To make sure your company is listed in both publications with its booth information, please go to www.plast-ex.org, and click on Exhibitor Resources .

You'll find three forms there:

List / Edit Plastics in Canada Magazine's Information
Add / Edit Product Preview for Plastics in Canada Magazine
Show/Edit Guide Categories for Plastics in Canada Magazine

These are for:
Your basic company listing;
A product press-release that CPIA can use for publicity;
and,
A list of the different products or services you will present at your booth.

Complete all three – you have to go back to Exhibitor Resources after each one – and click on 'modify' each time. And you're all set!

And if you want to be sure you draw the people to your show booth, contact Gillian Thomas at 416-764-1527 or gillian.thomas@plastics.rogers.com to arrange advertising in the Showguide or the Show Preview.

Plast-Ex update
It's just 10 weeks till Plast-Ex 2007 opens its doors. One thing you shouldn't miss at the show is the special display on the industry's history.
The show's volunteer committees have been assembling vintage moulding machines and auxiliary equipment, with equipment from as far back as the 1960s on display. You can compare the machine designs you work with today to the ones your boss bought when he started the company.
And don't forget to pick up your copy of It Was 50 Years Ago Today, an overview of the industry's history that looks back over a half-century of plastics trade shows in Canada and the people who built it into the $50-billion+ business it is today.
Plast-Ex runs from May 1 to 3 at the International Centre, on Airport Road, near Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

US trade shows combine resources
Plastics trade shows in the US have rationalised, with Canon Communications LLC combining its Plastec show with the Society of the Plastics Industry's Plastics USA events. Under the agreement, SPI will support all Canon's Plastec shows and related events, and Canon will provide financial incentives to exhibiting SPI members, purchase the Society's Plastics USA trade show, and add a Plastec Midwest/Plastics USA feature to its Rosemont (Chicago) event from September 25 - 27 this year. Canon has also been designated official partner with SPI in 2009 and 2012 for the NPE Advisor, a digital newsletter delivered before and during NPE.
"This move," says Charles G. McCurdy, president and CEO of Canon Communications, "adds to our extensive portfolio of properties serving advanced product design and manufacturing industries where technology developments, innovative processing software and controls, and next-generation resins and polymers continue to position plastics as the material of choice for a never-ending array of new product and equipment applications across the industrial landscape."
SPI president and CEO William Carteaux adds, "This agreement with Canon will enable SPI to focus more closely on our world-scale NPE expositions and to develop new online enterprises with even broader international potential."
Plastics USA, held triennially, typically features over 350 exhibitors and upwards of 10,000 attendees. The first event to be managed and promoted by Canon will be held on September 23-25, 2008 in Rosemont's Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. The Plastec series now includes shows in California, New York, and Georgia. The agreement goes into effect immediately.

Hallmark shuts its doors
One of the largest mouldmakers in Windsor, Ont., Hallmark Technologies Inc., parent of Hallmark Tools, has closed down, and is liquidating its assets. No announcement was made by the company, but local sources confirmed the closing as of February 8.
The current workforce, of about 150, is still waiting to hear if it will get paid. Windsor has faced other tool-shop closings over the past year, but this is one of the most significant in its effect on local employment.
Hallmark had moved to reinvent itself in the past 18 months under a new CEO, Todd Latouf. He launched a four-year process to make the firm competitive in the difficult current market, forming strategic alliances offshore and adopting the latest manufacturing philosophies.
However, aging equipment and problems with getting paid on time by automotive customers compounded the issues any large Canadian toolmaker faces. The company, in existence for over three decades, was unable to reposition itself soon enough to avoid collapse.

Negri Bossi gets a new look
Negri Bossi Inc. (Canada) (Mississauga, Ont.) has launched a new identity and is increasing its staff to support growing demand for its injection moulding machines, robots and services. Larry Pascucci, general manager, says, "Our strong Canadian-based identity will clearly differentiate us in a fiercely competitive marketplace. Driven by solid, credible business and technology arguments, we will define how and why our products and services provide significant productivity advantages to our customers."
The identity program is multi-faceted, and includes the introduction of RED, which stands for Reliable, Efficient, Digital advanced machine technologies. A specially chosen red colour has been developed to clearly identify the injection moulding machines. The program is also being supported by a series of Canadian identity logos and symbols that reinforce the company's evolving presence in Canada.
Pascucci states further, "We are increasing staff in the areas of sales, service, administration and specialised applications, notably integrated automation expertise. This year we will achieve critical mass and emerge as a true solutions-based company offering our customers immensely more value than previously."
Negri Bossi, which was founded in 1947, is part of Italy's Sacmi Group. It entered the Canadian market in 2001 and in the last several years has maintained double digit growth. The operation moved into its current 10,000 sq ft facility in 2002. The company attributes its growth to excellence in service, responsiveness and advanced machine technology earning the loyalty of a growing base of customers.

Symplastics finds new owners
Germany's Röchling Engineered Plastics KG has expanded its ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) business by acquiring Symplastics Ltd. (Orangeville, Ont.) The purchase complements Röchling's eastern US operation in Gastonia, NC, which makes UHMWPE sheet as large as 8x20 ft. Symplastics produces sheet up to 5 ft wide, as well as rod, tubes and profiles, and also specialises in semi-finished UHMW-PE shapes.
"This was one of those deals that was a good fit for both parties," says Tom Deans, who was president of Symplastics and remains as chief operating officer. "Röchling offers a broader product range, and global capacity."
Symplastics has been in expansion mode recently, in line with a sales spurt. It added two extruders last year and is about to add a third.
Röchling did not disclose terms of the deal. Symplastics, formerly privately held, has annual sales of about $26-million and employs 138, the company said in a news release. The deal includes a satellite sales and distribution operation, Symplastics Inc., in St. Peters, Mo. Production will continue at Orangeville and Gastonia.

Gefran consolidates in North America
Gefran Spa., an Italian manufacturer of process sensors and automation control instrumentation and components, has merged its two US divisions, Gefran ISI, Inc. (Winchester, Mass.) and SIEI America, Inc. (Charlotte, NC). Each division has changed its name to Gefran, Inc.
"Both locations continue to operate with fully staffed manufacturing, engineering, service and technical support teams, allowing us tremendous flexibility to offer our customers superior service and timely product delivery for the North American market," says Mark Caldwell, the newly appointed CEO of Gefran Inc. "This merger is part of Gefran's strategic goal to become more easily identified within the markets we serve, and to create a unified corporate structure and identity between our Winchester and Charlotte locations."
As CEO in North America, Caldwell is responsible for the overall growth and success of the Gefran product line. Gefran SpA. purchased melt pressure sensor manufacturer Industrial Sensors Inc. (ISI) in 1999 to expand its share of the extrusion sensors and instrumentation market within the North American plastics industry. In 2003 Gefran acquired SIEI, a company that manufactures electrical drives to regulate the speed of AC electric motors, DC electric motors, brushless motors and advanced control solutions for process automation. Gefran SpA. has six plants and direct subsidiaries in nine countries.
