US machinery sales drop, extrusion business up
The Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. (Washington, DC) says the total value of plastics machinery shipments in 2006 was done four per cent from 2005's total. However, extrusion machinery business was up by 21 per cent.
In the fourth quarter of the year, US manufacturers and importers of primary plastics machinery and equipment shipped $252-million in machinery (all figures in US dollars), 12 per cent lower than the $256-million shipped in the third quarter of 2006. For all 2006, shipments of primary plastics equipment totaled slightly more than $1-billion.
Economist Bill Woo provided the analysis for SPI's report, forecasting a leveling off period followed by growth in 2008. "A gradual downtrend may well persist through the first half of 2007,” he commented, “but spending for new equipment should begin to pick up in the second half of this year. The latest forecast calls for a flat year for shipments of plastics machinery in 2007 followed by a return to growth in 2008."
The report says extrusion machinery shipments totaled $39.5-million in the fourth quarter of 2006, 10 per cent stronger than the $35.8-million shipped in the third quarter. The shipment dollar value of blow molding machinery in the fourth quarter of 2006 was $36.7 million – up 85 percent from the $19.8 million shipped during the third quarter. For the year, blow moulding machinery shipments totaled $75.1-million, down six per cent compared with 2005.
The total value of injection moulding machinery shipments in the fourth quarter of 2006 was $176-million, 12 per cent less than the $200.5-million shipped in the third quarter of the year. For the entire year, the shipment dollars total for injection moulding machinery decreased eight per cent compared with 2005.
The report can be found online at SPI's Plastics Industry Store, www.plasticsindustry.org.

Bio-based materials receive cash boost in Ontario
The Ontario BioAuto Council has receives $6-million for development and demonstration of bio-based materials from the Ontario government. The council's aim is to use bio-based feedstocks for industrial materials, and it is working to link agriculture and forestry with the chemicals and plastics industry to produce materials and chemicals
from biological feedstocks.
The materials, such as flexible foams and rigid plastics, would be supplied to auto parts manufacturers and assemblers for incorporation into Ontario-built cars and trucks. Opportunities also exist in fine chemical manufacturing using lignin and hemicellulose from trees and enhanced biofibre production - from agriculture or forestry sources, for use in composite materials and as a replacement for fibreglass.
The Ontario BioAuto Council operates under a founding advisory board from automotive assembly and automobile manufacturing companies, agriculture, forestry, chemical and plastic manufacturing, public research, and several Ontario ministries. It has an office in Guelph, Ont.
