Basics of Plastics back by popular demand
If you missed the Basics of Plastics seminar this spring, there's a second chance this fall. And it's not just being held in the Toronto area this time – we're taking this popular instructional session on the road to Halifax.
The Basics of Plastics is aimed at people in the industry whose technical knowledge is limited, and who would like to learn more about plastics materials, machinery, processing techniques and end-use markets. The one-day seminar is taught by Paul Waller of The Plastics Touchpoint Group (Thornhill, Ont.), who has been presenting this type of educational event since the 1980s.
The Halifax date is November 5, and that for Toronto is December 2. The Halifax location is the city's World Trade & Convention Centre, and in the greater Toronto area it will be the Rogers Campus on Dixie Rd., Brampton, Ont.
Hours for the Halifax seminar are 8.30 am to 3.30 pm, and for Toronto, hours are still to be confirmed. The price for each seminar remains just $195, which will include break refreshments and lunch.
Both Basics of Plastics seminars are hosted by Plastics in Canada magazine. The one in Halifax is sponsored by Nova Scotia Business Inc. and the Atlantic region of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association.
The registration form will shortly be available available at www.plasticsincanada.com.
The last Basics of Plastics seminar was sold out.
Industry statistics for first half of 2008
Statistics Canada has released its data for shipments, imports and exports of plastics for the first half of 2008. The data is shown below, with the change compared to the first half of 2007 shown in brackets.
The plastic products industry showed a 12 percent drop in shipments and a 14 percent drop in exports during the first half of this year. Across the sub-industries that Statistics Canada tracks, only two showed an increase in shipments this year – polystyrene foam products and bottles. Unsurprisingly, the subsector showing the largest decline (37 percent) was plastic auto parts. This reflects the ongoing problems in the North American auto industry combined with the closure this year of several large producers of plastic auto parts.
Resin shipments were down substantially, though exports were up. While shipments were down in dollar terms, given that prices were higher in 2008 than in 2007, on a volume basis the decline was even larger. The decline is a result of the drop in demand from processors and the closure of several resin-producing facilities in the latter half of 2007 and early 2008.
For machinery, both shipments and exports were down markedly. For moulds, exports showed a steep drop.

Pioneers meet for golf
The Canadian Plastics Pioneers held its annual golf tournament in Richmond Hill, Ont., last week. Fine weather favoured 30 golfers, most of whom were honest about their scores. Here, tournament organiser Peter Stephen gets ready to hand out prizes.
