Ignorance Is Bliss
By Andrew Joseph
Did you read the headline/title? I hope so. It's just above this line. I often spend days agonizing over things like that. Agony. Pure agony. I can hear you all again asking: "Now what is he going on about? He must be pretty blissful." Ha-haa. You're all very funny.
Last month in the September e-newsletter of Canadian Packaging, in our monthly poll, I queried whether you readers FELT more secure with your packaging now or 10 years ago.
Well, the results are in: A whopping 35 per cent of you said you felt more secure NOW—but wait a minute! That means that 55, no, 65 per cent of you felt more secure with your packaging 10 years ago.
While there have been many improvements to our packaging, generally speaking little has changed: we still use corrugated, boxboard, plastic, paper, glass and everything else that was popular a decade ago.
What's changed, however, is the media. Now it's not necessarily that the media is reporting on the tainted red paint, magnets, or bacterial outbreaks – it always has... I think what has changed is that companies are better equipped to discover problems and do due diligence in warning the public of potential problems.
So... maybe the fact that we have more reports coming out about problems is a good thing—it means that our manufacturers are actually catching more problems than they were previously... or, things have been going to hell in a hand-basket—which I doubt.
So... while we may indeed have felt more secure 10 years ago, ignorance may indeed have been bliss, we're definitely more secure nowadays.
Somewhere secure,
Andrew Joseph

Norampac recently announced that its boxboard manufacturing East Angus and Jonquière mills, have received an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification for their usage of raw materials which are responsibly produced from an environmental standpoint. The two mills have received its certification from SGS, a registered certifier of the FSC.
The Norampac-Cascades East Angus mill becomes the first boxboard manufacturer to receive the FSC 100% recycled certification in North America, an honorable mention for this Cascades division. In order to obtain the FSC 100% recycled certification for its Conquest and Orford products, the East Angus mill had to demonstrate that it respects the minimum percentage of post-consumer fibers required when purchasing the raw materials.
As for the Norampac-Cascades Jonquière mill, it has received the FSC mixed certification for its products such as ArctiKoat, Sylvacycle, Supercycle, Sylvatech, Microcycle and Zkoat. This type of certification is given to mills that manufacture their products from both recycled and virgin fibers. The Jonquière mill also proved throughout the rigorous FSC verification process, that its products are made with the percentage of post-consumer fibers required and from FSC certified virgin fibers.
The Norampac-Cascades Versailles (CT) mill has also been audited in the FSC standardization process for its products, and expects to receive the certification shortly.

Now known around the world for its technological leadership in flexible and thermoformed packaging, Curwood, Inc. got its start in a small, rented garage extruding polyethylene film for the meat and cheese industries.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008, Curwood is now one of the world's premier providers of flexible and thermoformed packaging for the food, beverage and consumer products industries.
Although Oshkosh, Wisconsin-based Curwood currently has state-of-the-art locations throughout North America, South America, Asia and Europe, it got its start in a small, rented New London, Wisconsin, garage. At the time, area businessmen Howard Curler, a chemical engineer, and Bob Woods, a mechanical engineer, set out to launch their own flexible packaging business. Their vision was to develop polymer extrusion technology to make the finest flexible packaging possible for meat and cheese. Their plans began to take shape with a single machine and their first product—polyethylene packaging films. In 1962, the young company added vacuum-packaging equipment to their offering to complement their high-performance materials.
It didn't take long for the innovative startup to grow into an attractive investment—Bemis Company purchased Curwood just seven years after its founding. Bemis, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2008, provided support and resources to help Curwood grow and invest in new technologies to meet the emerging needs of its meat and dairy customers.
Throughout the years, Curwood engineered packaging advances that improved the way meat and cheese—and many other products—went to market. Now Curwood is known around the world for its technological leadership in high-barrier packaging.
The company's flexible films, rigid packaging, shrink materials and equipment are used throughout the meat, cheese, coffee, bakery, beverage and consumer products industries. Curwood is part of Bemis Company, the largest flexible packaging supplier in the Americas.

A new seasonal launch from Fox's Party Rings—now Halloween Rings —has confirmed the suitability of RPC Containers Blackburn's large-sized Thor Pot for the convenient sharing of snacks.
Halloween Rings has been launched to provide kids with a fun sharing concept over the Halloween period, with the familiar Party Rings biscuits finished in orange and black icing to suit the occasion. Launched in October, the pack is designed to stand-out in supermarkets' Halloween display areas rather than in the biscuit aisle.
Fox's Biscuits already uses RPC Blackburn's Thor Pot for its standard Party Rings sharing pack and has found it to be popular with families, as the tub can be passed around at parties, and because it is re-sealable it also helps to maintain product freshness to a high standard.
The consistency of branding across the Party Rings portfolio that comes with using the same container is also a significant advantage, as RPC Blackburn has supplied the same 1080ml Thor Pot used for the standard sharing pack, but redecorated to maximize the impact of the launch.
Post-mould labelling has been used to maximise the impact of Foxís vivid label design, which is overtly kid-friendly to reflect the personality of the Party Rings brand. In addition, the lid is color-matched to represent the shade of orange featured on the biscuits themselves.

QuickLabel Systems, a product group of Astro-Med, Inc. has released a new, higher-speed version of its popular Vivo! short-run digital color label printer. The Vivo! now prints at a speed of three-inches per second, a 50 per cent increase in speed over the previous Vivo! model.
The Vivo! is an electrophotographic digital label printing system that prints photo-quality color labels on roll-fed label stock, allowing on-demand label printing with variable label content, including photos, graphics, and barcodes. The toner-based Vivo! prints labels on-demand, allowing manufacturers to quickly label their products according to sales orders.
The number of labels the Vivo! can print per hour varies with label size, but a company with color labels in the size 3" x 4" (76mm x 102mm) would be able to print 19,008 digital labels in an 8-hour shift day – and that's with variable label content.
What makes the Vivo! such a powerful production tool is that it makes short-run label printing as affordable as it is fast – those 19,008 labels printed on-demand would cost no more than $0.06 - $0.12 each, depending on toner coverage. According to the company, the increase in speed is the most significant new enhancement to QuickLabel's flagship Vivo! digital label printer. The Vivo! was also modified to simplify the label re-loading process and to optimize media handling through the print engine.
More information about the Vivo! and QuickLabel printers is available at www.QuickLabel.com , or by telephoning 1-877-757-7978 toll-free in the USA and Canada.
