Humber helps internationally trained engineers

Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning is launching a program to assist internationally-trained engineers to find work in their field in Canada. The program, which will receive more than $1 million in funding from the Ontario government, will begin in September 2008. The project will have four pilot intakes which will be completed by December 2009.

Engineering Connections: Software Skills Enhancement is the engineering software training and job search program Humber has created for internationally-trained engineers.

“The aim of the program is to ensure that newcomers have the core engineering and software skills Canadian employers are demanding,” said David Alcock, associate dean, School of Applied Technology at Humber. “This program fills a skills gap for internationally-trained engineers, and addresses a skills shortage for Ontario employers.”

Humber is offering this program in partnership with ACCES Employment, a community agency that will provide job search assistance to the participants as part of the program. Engineering Connections: Software Skills Enhancement will run at Humber’s North Campus, free of charge, to all qualified candidates.

The program curriculum includes training on industry-specific software, workshops on engineering codes and standards, and safety regulations. Job search strategies including résumé preparation, interviewing skills and self marketing to employers will also be discussed.

The pilot project will have four intakes:
Sept. 15, 2008 – Dec. 19, 2008
Feb. 2, 2009 - May 18, 2009
May 25, 2009 – Aug. 29, 2009
Sept. 14, 2009 – Dec. 19, 2009
