Siemens’ synchronous technology bridges the gap between 3D modeling techniques
By Ralph Grabowski | August 10, 2008

Last April, Siemens PLM Software announced synchronous technology, a much-heralded feature of Solid Edge 2008 and NX 6. To accompany the announcement, the company made lofty claims that had the immediate effect making some doubt their veracity. Doubt is good, and it will take months of real-life use for users to determine whether this "third way of 3D modelling" works for them. In the meantime, mechanical CAD users are wondering: Is ST just a marketing blip or the Next Big Thing?

How to get the most from a rapid prototyping service bureau
By Mike McLeod | August 10, 2008
Rapid prototyping (RP) service bureaus provide many of the benefits of ownership at a fraction of the cost. More importantly, they can help customers weave through the complex process of prepping their designs for output, choosing the right RP technology and even save money by fixing faulty CAD files or recommending design changes that will shorten build time. On the premise that an educated customer is the best customer, the following are some general guidelines on how to get the most from a RP service bureau.

PTC handles Quebec manufacturer’s assembly designs and data management
By André Voshart | August 10, 2008
When it came to choosing the ideal PLM implementation, Labrie Environmental Group's CAD/PDM administrator Marc-André Verville says they picked PTC Windchill PDMLink in part because Labrie had already standardized its 3D design on Pro/ENGINEER. Another selling point was the modularity and expansion available with other PTC products, such as Windchill MPMLink, which syncs manufacturing process management with engineering.

Getting PLM in Gear

Quebec aerospace manufacturer revamps engineering processes with ENOVIA SmarTeam
August 10, 2008
For more than 60 years, the aircraft industry has relied on Longueuil, Que.-based Héroux-Devtek Inc.’s landing gears, hydraulic actuators and flight critical components to get their planes on and off the ground. But, with eight manufacturing facilities across North America, the company didn't have a way for both its engineering and manufacturing teams to collaborate. As a result, many issues were being identified after a finished design was released to manufacturing—a point at which it gets expensive to deal with changes.

Building-block style modular design

Sept. 10, 2008
Bosch Rexroth has introduced an approach to Cartesian Motion Systems that provides building-block style modular design of material handling, pick-and-place, palletizing, inspection and related applications. Called camoLINE, the system includes electromechanical and pneumatic axes, bolt-together connection technology, and aluminum structural framing, which allow engineers to create the best fit for their applications.

Floating panel fasteners

Sept. 10, 2008
PennEngineering has expanded its PEM floating access hardware to include a captive screw assembly for permanent installation into panels of any hardness with the capability to compensate for up to 0.060 in./1.52 mm mating thread misalignment. The licensed MAThread anti cross-threading screw technology adds value by correcting off-angle installations and reliably aligning components.

Gears for medical devices

Sept. 10, 2008
Forest City Gear has successfully completed the achievement of ISO 13485, the process quality management certification for manufacturing medical devices. Gears are now in production for various medical devices, including such examples as a 4340 alloy steel gear for the articulation of the patient table in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit, as well as a brass gear for mechanical movement in an X-ray machine and a composite gear assembly for a blood infusion pumping station.

Digital power supply

Sept. 10, 2008
Lambda has introduced a new range of digitally controlled modules to its innovative NV-Power family of configurable AC-DC power supplies enabling increased power output of up to 1450W peak rating for 10 seconds. The new modules enable Lambda to satisfy the demand for low-profile configurable power solutions from 350W to above 1,000W for broadcast, instrumentation, medical equipment, ATE, automation, routers, servers and security networks.
