    July Poll:
VOC Regulations for Paints and Coatings in Canada

With the current VOC regulations for paints and coatings and more regulations expected down the road, are you now considering hiring a regulatory affairs person who can help your company meet regulatory requirements?

    Yes.
    No.

    Current Results

    Last Edition's Poll Results
General Motors has vowed not to overturn its decision to close its Oshawa truck assembly plant, despite the objections from the Canadian Auto Workers union that the closure violates a recently signed collective bargaining agreement. In our last online poll, we asked if you thought GM’s actions were reasonable.
Of the 19 votes, 15 (79 per cent) said “yes”, the company had no choice given current market conditions for trucks. Only four (21 per cent) said that the company should have kept the plant open to make trucks or other vehicles.

READER COMMENTS ABOUT GM OSHAWA PLANT CLOSING

What happens to our North American auto manufacturers is no less than a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, by ignoring that oil prices will go up. So, while foreign manufacturers are investing and building fuel efficient cars and technologies, we continued to build and promote gas-guzzling behemoths here for the high profit margins.
The labor force is a factor too when their rate is $30 more per hour than Japanese transplants GM claimed, how can they compete. In the end corporate management must take responsibility for their decision making that have led to this.

When will the union folks wake up and smell the coffee? You can't be paid $25.00 an hour to screw a bolt all day, you're only screwing yourself and the other non-union automotive dependent firms in the long run. Thanks a lot union people!

    Stats and Facts

Crude Oil Prices: Not going down any time soon
Research firms continue to raise their forecasts for the price of crude oil given the dramatic and sustained rise in prices observed in recent times. Prices are now expected to stay above $100 through 2010. Prices are remaining high even though demand in the developed world is flat, and perhaps even declining with the current slowdown in the US, which by itself is responsible for 25 per cent of global consumption. This is being more than offset by strong demand growth in the developing world. Part of the reason that demand growth has remained so strong in developing economies despite the rapid rise in crude oil prices is due to the fact that gasoline and diesel prices are subsidized in some of these countries. For example, the Chinese government fixes the price of transportation fuels to such an extent that the refiners cannot be profitable in today's high-crude environment. The refiners are then compensated in the form of rebates from the Chinese government, which in 2007 amounted to about $45 billion or 1.1 per cent of GDP. It is expected that the Chinese government will continue this practice, viewing the cost as manageable in order to retain high growth in the broader economy. (Interestingly, on June 20 the Chinese government announced that the price for gasoline and diesel would be increased by 18 per cent in response to high crude oil prices.) A number of other developing countries follow similar policies, although some are currently in the process of removing the subsidy.
