Rohm & Haas survey: customers want formaldehyde-free biocide
January 22, 2007 |
A survey of Philadelphia, PA-based Rohm and Haas Co.'s biocide customers reveals that "formaldehyde-free" is the top concern for coatings formulators when selecting a biocide. Over 77 per cent of respondents rated "formaldehyde-free" as 4 or 5 on a scale of importance with a rating of 5 being "most important." Formaldehyde is a concern for indoor air quality and has been categorized as a human carcinogen by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer. The other chief concerns for purchasing a biocide were "no adverse effects on formulation or on film" (70.1 per cent), and "long lasting" (62.5 per cent).
The survey also showed that at least one third of the companies add biocides at least two to three times per year to protect or clean up material that is located in an unagitated storage tank.
