New study of Indian paint and coatings market released
|

A new study of the Indian paint and coatings market points to phenomenal growth prospects for the next decade in the world's most populous country. Indian paint demand, now estimated at 1.22 million tonnes, is expected to surpass two million tonnes by 2011 with architectural coatings accounting for 81 per cent of the market, according to A Profile of the Indian Paint Industry, 3rd Edition, recently published by Information Research, London, United Kingdom.

According to the study, every sub-segment of the architectural coatings market should experience double-digit growth through 2011 due to the booming construction industry. The decorative coatings market in India is expanding rapidly and will likely see an average of 16 per cent growth per annum for the next five years. The industrial coatings sector is also expected to see growth of approximately 17 per cent per annum due to demand for protective coatings for things like refineries, power stations and irrigation applications. There will be strong demand for civil infrastructure applications in particular as the country builds more and better roads.

The powder coatings segment will also see strong growth due to increased demand for white goods that is driven by rising incomes and living standards. According to a recent article in the India Powder Coatings e-newsletter, the costs for powder coatings applications in India have come down considerably since the early 90s due to the improvements in the engineering and technical capacities of the chemists working in the industry.
