Growth forecast for coatings for plastics in Western Europe led by UV curables
October 18, 2007 |
Information Research(IRL)has published a second edition
of its study, The Western European Market for Coatings
for Plastics. The market is expected to grow at a rate
of approximately 2.5 per cent per annum, from 144,000 tonnes
in 2006 to 163,700 tonnes by 2011. Most regions in Western
Europe are expected to see growth, led by Germany with a
35 per cent market share, followed by Iberia(21 per cent),
and France(14 per cent). The exception is UK and Ireland,
which is expected to contract. The contraction is believed
to be because of the reduction of manufacturing in the region
and the relocation of production sites to the Far East, China
and Eastern Europe.
According
to IRL analyst and author of the report, Andrew Jackson,
the forecast market growth is due to the increasing use of
plastics in the automotive and electronic sectors, and the
increasing demand for personalization of these products in
terms of touch and appearance. “In particular, an area that shows signs of a
promising future is that of UV-curable coatings,” says Jackson. “As
yet it has not been widely embraced but this should change in the future as these
coatings are beginning to be used in preference to other technologies and once
the range of colour additives and effects are broadened, then there should be
rapid growth in the uptake of this coating method.”
