More Than 1 Billion Hungry
A United Nations food agency says a record 1.02 billion people are hungry around the world, largely due to the global economic crisis and stubbornly high food prices. Compared with last year, there are 100 million more people who are hungry, meaning they receive fewer than 1,800 calories a day, the Food and Agriculture Organization said in a report released Friday.

Uncertain Future for N.L. Dominion
The Dominion store in Marystown, N.L., may be shut down this fall. Loblaw Cos. Ltd., the grocery chain’s parent company based in Ontario, is prepared to shut down its lone location on the Burin Peninsula unless a new, shorter-term arrangement can be reached to rent the present space at Peninsula Mall. Inge Van den Berg, the company’s senior vice-president of corporate affairs, indicated the current lease expires this October.

Film Makes You Think Before You Eat
Food Inc., which opened in theatres last week, is a documentary on the food world. It is getting raves from the likes of nutrition and public health professor Marion Nestle, The New York Times' Mark Bittman and The Atlantic's Corby Kummer.
