  • M-real Corporation has agreed to sell its graphic papers division to Sappi for $1.1 billion (750 million euro). The sale includes mills in Finland, Germany and Switzerland.
  • EFI's superwide inkjet printer unit VUTEk, has claimed victory in its defense of a patent lawsuit filed by Leggett & Platt, Inc. in 2005 regarding ultra-violet (UV) ink curing technology. The Federal Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. concluded that claims of Leggett & Platt's (L&P) patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,755,518) were invalid.
  • German press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) adjusted its 2008 earnings forecast downward based partly on slumping sheetfed press sales following drupa due to tight credit markets in the U.S. and other regions. KBA anticipates an overall drop in sales from 1.6 billion euro in 2007 to around 1.5 billion euro for 2008, and it expects pre-tax earnings to fall to negative numbers, after a positive showing of 63.2 million euro last year.
  • Inca Digital Printers in the U.K. has introduced the Inca Spyder V, a faster version of its Spyder series of flatbed UV inkjet printers with a maximum speed of 130 m2/hr compared with a top speed of 80 m2/hr on previous Spyder models.
  • Xerox Canada is now taking orders for the Xerox iGen4, the new 700 Digital Production Press and the DocuColor 5000AP (list prices: iGen 4, $574,500; 700, $67,494; and DC 5000AP, $120,000).
  • Adobe announced details of Creative Suite 4 (CS4), www.adobe.com/creativesuite which will start shipping in October. There are six CS4 suites or individual upgrades of 13 stand-alone applications. The CS4 Master Collection, combining virtually all of the new applications, will list at US$2,499. Adobe plans to offer tiered upgrade pricing from previous versions.
