Looking forward to 2008 As 2007 approaches its final days, there are a few things to look out for in 2008:
Quebecor World is hoping a new man at the top will be able to right the ship, while some financial analysts are concerned the ship may be sinking. It will be hard to sell off the printing giant; maybe we'll see a piece-by-piece dismantling.
Good luck to Grafikom CEO Gord Griffiths and new vice president of sales Rael Fisher as they try to find synergies and drive growth across that multi-plant sheetfed commercial printing platform.
We all look forward to more deliverables from the Canadian Printing Industries Sector Council (CPISC), as the government-funded project works to improve the state of print education and training in Canada.
drupa 08 promises to cover more area than ever before, and we look forward to seeing the innovations and surprises first-hand in late May. If you haven't booked your travel to Germany yet (you have to see it at least once in your lifetime), get on it. (packages available at 888-DRUPA08)
If you get your hands on a December 2007 issue of Canadian Printer check out the cover. It was digitally printed on a Kodak Nexpress. Variable data was used on the front cover and inside and outside back cover as well. If you're not a subscriber, call a friend who is and ask for their reaction.
I'd like to hear what people think as well, so drop me a line.
As expected, the majority (60%) of our readers spend over four hours a day in front of a computer. The fact that this newsletter is distributed online led us to believe that would be the case. We also assume this means that time is spent at work. We hope our regular interruption to your work time is considered valuable.

Lucas Out, Mallette In, at Quebecor World Following a tumultuous month, where the sale of its European division was on then off, and other refinancing deals also fell through, troubled Quebecor World has now undergone a leadership change, as Harvard-educated Wes Lucas (Amercian born and previously president and CEO of Sun Chemical) is gone as president/CEO after a whirlwind year-and-a-half, replaced with Jacques Mallette, a University of Montreal grad and a member of the Quebecor family since March 2003.
Lucas was inserted into the leadership role at QW in May 2006 when Pierre Karl Péladeau moved over to run the family's media division, Quebecor Media (while also retaining the top job at Quebecor Inc. the parent holding company). Lucas had no previous experience running a printing company. Mallette comes in having been exec vp and CFO of Quebecor World since September 2005, and previously CFO of Quebecor Inc, and Quebecor Media from March 2003. A chartered accountant, Mallette has a stiff challenge ahead.
Shareholders of the Dutch-based Roto Smeets de Boer (RSDB NV) turned down the proposed $341 million acquisition/merger of Quebecor World's European operations, forcing the Montreal-based printing giant to search for other options to gain value from its European business, including possible consolidation.
This news, in conjunction with earlier unsuccessful refinancing attempts, dropped share prices of Quebecor World to all time lows, at one point sinking to below $1.20 on the TSX.
The company is in desperate need of strengthening its balance sheet and liquidity.
