Things I Hear

Travel for Innovation

In a build up to the IPEX international printing trade show in Birmingham, UK, this April (April 4-11, www.ipex.org), I've had the opportunity to attend international media events in the UK to preview the facilities and listen to some pre-show promotion from vendors.

These events present a broad world view on the state of the graphic arts industry from the perspective of vendors and other journalists from across the globe. Familiar trends get repeated from Australia to Austria, where consolidation is ongoing and overall growth in conventional printing is flat at best.

The greatest benefit of an event like IPEX for visitors from Canada is the opportunity to seek out unique product vendors and gain competitive intelligence through the exposure to innovative printing ideas already in practice in other parts of the world.

Innovation is preached as the key to growing new business and introducing more profitability into this mature industry, and both the show company and a large number of the exhibitors have expressed their intent on placing a strong focus on real-life success stories at IPEX. One example is the INNOV8 Theatre being set up by the IPEX organizers.

In our global market it's necessary to start thinking beyond your borders. Experiencing new applications on display at an overseas exhibition like IPEX and customizing new solutions for your customers back home seems like an obvious strategy for a progressive company. It's almost too easy. It's not about stealing ideas, it's about grasping new concepts that have been proven to work and turning them into your own. A trip overseas for a trade show may seem like an extravagant expense, but I think it's worth the adventure even if it turns out to be nothing more than an investment in ideas.

Some IPEX stats:

  • anticipating around 800 exhibiting companies
  • expecting around 36% of attendees from overseas
  • 11 exhibit halls (with cafes and bars in every hall)
  • organizers aim to attract 74,000 visitors
  • free entrance for those who pre-register online (£30 at the door)

Poll

Processless CTP?

In our last poll we asked, "Are you seeing opportunity in wide format inkjet printing?" 100% of our respondents indicated they are already in the market. That's a strong endorsement for demand and the implementation of wide format inkjet printing in the commercial market.

This time we'd like to know:

Quebecor World Continues to Change

As the New Year began Quebecor World announced news of its continued commitment to streamlining its operations. The company finished paring down its non-core Canadian operations with the sell-off of its 51% holding in Quebecor Merrill Canada Inc. The ownership stake in the financial printing operation was sold to Merrill Corp. (headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota). Quebecor and Merrill Corp formed the Canadian joint venture in 1996, integrating Quebecor's financial printing outfits in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal with Merrill's Canadian operations in Toronto and Montreal.
Quebecor World has also secured financing and commitment of funds for its ongoing capital investments in North America and Europe, including the purchase of two 4.3 metre gravure presses in Belgium and 64-page web offset presses for facilities in Austria and Spain. Investments in France and the UK are conditional on negotiations with employee representatives.

Printer Suing Suppliers

R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, the world's largest commercial printing outfit, has filed a lawsuit against Quark, Inc. and Creo, Inc. (a subsidiary of the Eastman Kodak Company). The company's lawsuit alleges that products manufactured and sold by the defendants infringe on RR Donnelley patents in the area of digital print processes.

More Harry Potter

The paperback edition of the sixth Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will be released on July 25, 2006 in both Canada and the U.S. (a first printing of 2 million copies in the U.S.). Canada Post and Rogers Magazine Deal

Rogers Publishing and Canada Post have announced a new publishing/distribution arrangement, targeting residents who notify Canada Post they are re-locating, with a magazine to tempt their home furnishing/design spending.
With about 1.2 million Canadians annually registering a residential move with Canada Post, Rogers will be able to directly address a highly-targeted distribution list, mailing 250,000 issues, as well as selling issues on newsstands.
Rogers Media (owners of Canadian Printer) will launch the new consumer shopping magazines targeting home/décor items, one in French and one in English, beginning in September. The magazines will feature high production values, with a slightly oversize (8-3/4 x 10-3/4-inch) trimsize and will be perfect bound. Plans are for Rogers to publish three issues in each language in 2006 and six issues in 2007.
In addition, Rogers will also re-launch a Canada Post publication, Smartmoves/Déménageur, publishing two issues this year, the first to mail in April.
