Things I Hear

Fade to Black

For those active in the Canadian printing industry, few people, if any, have had as much influence on the next generation of printers as Mary Black.
Over the past 10 years Black has made great strides as Chair of Ryerson University's Graphic Communications Management program, raising both the profile and professionalism of the program, but her term is finally ending. Her most significant accomplishment—aside from boosting enrollment due to her relentless touring of high schools—has been spearheading development of the School's new home, the Heidelberg Centre.
Leading a committed volunteer advisory council comprised of industry representatives (both printers and suppliers), Black and the group secured almost every dollar of the $10.5 million building fund it established, remaining just under $1 million shy of its goal.
Black's commitment to the industry has not gone unnoticed. Just two weeks ago, a flurry of accolades came her way, while she too doled out some of her own.

  • Tuesday, April 26th was Black's final meeting as Chair of the GCM School's advisory board, (at that meeting the building fund received a significant boost from Weyerhaeuser). Following the meeting students from the program organized an emotional farewell celebration.

Harmony Printing and advisory committee member, Bonny Skene, public
affairs manager (Ontario) and Dan Blahitka, sales manager, both of
    Weyerhaeuser Co. Ltd.

  • Wednesday, April 27th, at a Toronto Craftsmen Club meeting, Mary was presented with a cheque for the School (proceeds from a combined event with the Ontario Assoc. of Quick Printers held in the fall), and she was proudly able to point out many past graduates in the crowd.
  • Thursday, April 28th, Mary was on hand to provide encouragement to the graduating class of the Eva's Pheonix print shop program, a social endeavor to provide life skills to displaced youth, where she sits on the advisory board.

Eva's Print Shop graduates and advisory board members.
  • Friday, April 29th, the week culminated with the OPIA Gala where Black was recognized with an Outstanding Service Award.

I was fortunate to have attended all of these events, and can personally attest to her dedication towards the best interests of this industry (she sits on Canadian Printer's editorial advisory board).
Mary has been described by many as a driven lady, one who has a way of getting what she wants. And fortunately she wants to see a brilliant future for the graphic arts.
As strong as her character is, her most emotional moments have been the tearful goodbyes for the students, a significant group that she's extremely proud of and who she acknowledges she'll miss the most.
Although her term as Chair of the GCM School ends, her affiliation with the program and the industry will not end. The Heidelberg Centre itself will be a long-standing tribute to Mary Black.

    See you soon

    Regards,
    Doug Picklyk

    Poll

    Quality or service?

In our last poll we asked printers to identify what is most important to their customers: price, quality or service. Based on the 40 responses we received, 43% indicated price was the number one priority. It was followed by quality at 35% and finally service at only 23%.
This contrasts to a recent poll Canadian Printer took of print buyers, where according to our survey (of 100 respondents) the most important criteria for them when selecting a printer was quality (selected as most important by 62%), followed by reliability and service. Price was further down, as only 22% considered it to be the most important factor.

    Current Results

    Quebecor World Divesting Sheetfed Group
    Pierre Karl Peladeau
Upon announcing its disappointing first quarter financial results, Qubecor World publicized it is selling off its commercial group, a division that includes primarily sheetfed offset operations comprised of a dozen plants with locations in Canada and the U.S. and sales of US$250 million in 2004. In a Q1 conference call, Pierre Karl Peladeau, president and CEO of Quebecor World said the commercial group "was never really a core business to [the company]. The company announced it has entered into negotiations to sell the commercial plants and anticipates finalizing the deal before the end of Q2.
In consolidated results, revenue for Q1 was US$1.6 billion compared to US$1.5 billion last year, essentially flat when currency fluctuation and paper costs are considered. Net income was down 55% to $16 million, after restructuring and other charges, from $35.8 million in Q1 2004
In North America revenues increased slightly, but operating margins were down, and in Canada results were ahead of last year, due to growth in retail and directory sectors.
The company announced its Latin America book printing operation is being positioned as a low-cost alternative for publishers currently sending jobs offshore to Asia.

Mail Boxes Etc. Aquires Ben's Printing

The Canadian operation of Mail Boxes Etc., a franchise network of retail business centres, is continuing its reach into the commercial print space with the launch of a new offset print operation in downtown Toronto. Mail Boxes Etc. has acquired Ben’s Printing, a 35-year-old quick print shop located close to the heart of Toronto's downtown business centre. Coinciding with purchase, a new MBE centre, has been co-located in Ben’s Printing. This centre will operate as a large order printing hub for all 50 Greater Toronto Area locations, and the plan is for MBE to add similar commercial printing centres across Canada over the next few years in order to service all of its 275 locations in the country. "Digital and commercial printing are a significant part of our business," comments Ralph Askar, president and CEO of Mail Boxes Etc. Canada. "With more and more customers looking for increased printing options, over and above our existing digital printing capability, the expansion of offset printing makes strong business sense," he says. "Our goal is to roll out a ‘hub and spoke’ operation for the benefit of all our centres and customers. Our network is very excited about this new capability and direction,” he states. The Toronto move is MBE’s second acquisition of an independent commercial printing operation. Last year the organization purchased four Henry Armstrong Printing stores in Winnipeg, establishing large-run hubs for its 10 Winnipeg-area shops.

    OPIA on Queen's Park

The Ontario Printing and Imaging Association made its annual visit to Ontario's top legislators at Queen's Park in Toronto to raise awareness of the industry and discuss topics of concern for printers across the province. OPIA's delegation of 22 targeted the Ministries of Labour, Environment, Economic Development and Trade, Finance and Energy. Industry representatives had successful meetings with a number of senior bureaucrats and Members of the House with constructive dialogues and positive feedback. A particularly upbeat meeting was held with the Ministry of Environment (MOE) where a strong connection was made and positive steps were taken to ensure the industry's practices and conditions are better understood with concern to MOE's regulatory plans going forward.

    Research Supports Packaging Printing Growth
We've heard for years that packaging is the strongest growth market for printing, and now a study published by the Print Industries Market Information and Research Organization (PRIMIR) provides some research to back up these claims.
Package Printing and Converting, An Industry Assessment: 2004-2009 looks at the overall packaging printing and converting industry, including corrugated packaging, folding carton, flexible packaging and tag/label production. According to the study, packaging printing and converting was a US$68 billion industry in 2004 and projections have it reaching US$83 billion by 2009. Annual growth rates over this period are expected to range from 3 percent for folding and corrugated cartons to 5.7 percent for labels, with flexible packaging growing somewhere in between. Unwrapping Packaging Printing
Diversifying With Packaging Services: Unlocking Hidden Profit Potential, just released by the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) is a primer studying key drivers of the packaging market and exploring barriers to markets served by specific printing processes, including flexography, gravure, dry offset, metal decorating, and screen and specialty printing. A chapter on succeeding in the packaging market provides guidelines to getting started, implementing best procurement practices, and finding and responding to market opportunities. Cooking Up Sales Ideas
The time has come for print sales people to expand their horizons and understand cross-selling strategies to offer their clients value and bring more money to the company. A new book published by the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL), Cross-Media Cookbook: A Sales Primer, gets the process in motion. The 208-page Cross-Media Cookbook discusses making the transition to consultative selling, developing a compelling proposal and delivering high-impact presentations.

    Workflow Trends
In late 2004, InfoTrends/CAP Ventures conducted a study on the print production software market: The Global Print Production Workflow Market: Enabling Fundamental Business Change in Graphic Arts. The report suggests workflow software will play a role as print service providers reexamine their basic business models and accept that revenue growth and increased profit will be dependent upon cost reduction through workflow efficiencies, and higher-margin value-added services.
InfoTrends/CAP Ventures expects the worldwide production software market to show an annual growth rate of 8.3 percent though 2008 as companies increase efficiencies. The study suggests hybrid offset-digital production workflow management will show the greatest increase as more digital colour printing technology migrates into offset environments.
Other growth areas include print e-business software, variable data design and production solutions, and digital production workflow management.
