Energize Your Business

Where are your new employees coming from? Are you injecting any new ideas or youthful energy into your organization?
Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend the annual Job Fair hosted by the Graphic Communications Management (GCM) program at Ryerson University in Toronto. The evening event is an opportunity for printing companies and suppliers to sit down with students genuinely interested in launching careers in the graphic arts industry.
The four-year GCM program requires third-year students to secure industry-related summer employment (May to August), and in many cases the interns return to those companies the following year as permanent hires.
There were 62 tables occupied by companies from across Ontario and outside of the province too.
According to Mary Black, outgoing chair of the GCM program, there were around 80 third-year students looking to intern for the summer, and 60 fourth-year graduating students looking to be hired. Most will receive more than one offer upon graduation. Competition for this talent can be stiff.
The enthusiasm of the students was evident. "There's a lot of pent up energy here," noted Brian Collict, vice president and general manager, Sun Chemical Canada, who was making his first prospecting visit to the job fair.
Kevin Prosser, sales manager with the Yearbook division of Friesens, the Altona, Manitoba book printer, was attending the job fair for the third time.
According to Prosser, Friesens is interested in taking on an intern who'll be spending the summer in Altona. "We want them to get a understanding of what our culture is all about." The company has created a strong connection with the Ryerson program and has hired graduates in the past.
The Job Fair allows students to make that all-important first impression, and that's about it. To accommodate the number of students and potential employers, the mini-interviews last 10 minutes, the brief intervals ending with the sound of a gong.
This opportunity to assess the talent doesn't cost the employers anything but time, and the payoff can be very rewarding. It's all about introducing new blood into the industry, and as Collict suggested, new energy.
Take a look at your current staff and question if it's necessary to inject some youthful outlooks into your current culture. A mix of experience and youth will set any company up for the future, creating an ongoing learning environment within the organization.

Also present at the Ryerson event were participants in the Eva's Phoenix Print Shop program in Toronto, a training ground for homeless or at-risk youth, providing life skills training including 20 weeks of on-the-job instruction in a print shop equipped with prepress, platemaking, small-format offset presses and finishing equipment. These students were on-hand to enlighten printing companies of another avenue to find entry-level help for technical positions.
The event was encouraging, featuring knowledgeable and motivated students ready to step up and be welcomed into the industry.

Poll

What comes first?

Last time we asked, "Is your company's environmental policy of any concern to your important customers?" The results were almost split down the middle, 46% saying yes, 43% saying no and the final 11% indicating they're not sure. Printing and the environment are inextricably linked, yet it appears less than half of our respondents' customers pay attention.

Winnipeg Printer On Growth Path

by Myron Love
Printcrafters Inc. has taken its first step toward building a megaprinting business. The Winnipeg-based printer's acquisition of competitor, The Westcan Printing Group, in mid-February adds 35 staff to Printcrafters' 85 and boosts the company's annual revenue to about $18 million this year.
"We began discussions with Westcan a year ago," says Printcrafters' president and CEO Bob Payne. Both companies produce books and magazines, making for a natural fit.
"We foresee acquiring two or three more Winnipeg companies and consolidating what we have here, then expand our acquisitions to other cities," Payne says of the company's long-term planning. "Our goal is to build up a billion dollar business within 20 years."
Printcrafters was established in 1996 as an employee-owned start-up with a staff of 11. A diversified sheetfed company, Printcrafters has made recent investments in stochastic screening and closed-loop colour control technology.
Both Printcrafters and Westcan will continue to operate out of their existing locations.

Mega Printers and the Buyer's Market

Transcontinental has already made an acquisition and Quebecor World announced it is in acquisition mode. Now the printing industry will wait to see what happens next in what Quebecor World's CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau calls a "buyer's market."
Transcontinental Inc. made its move in mid-February acquiring JDM, Inc., a Pennsylvania-area direct mail company. Now part of Transcontinental Direct U.S.A. Inc., JDM operates five facilities in eastern Pennsylvania, a printing plant and four direct mail facilities. JDM adds more than 1,100 employees and annual revenues of $112 million. Transcontinental's annual revenues from direct marketing activities, including Transcontinental Direct U.S.A. and Canadian facilities in Toronto and Montreal, is now $389 million.
Cost cutting is paying off for Quebecor World, as the company reported increased operating income and improved operating margins for 2004. Full-year revenue increase to a record US$6.6 billion, compared to US$6.4 billion in 2003.
For the fourth quarter of 2004, Quebecor World's operating margin was 8.6%, compared to 5% in 2003.
The company's cash flow has improved and capital acquisition plans are in place to improve efficiencies over the next couple years, and CEO Peladeau has said the company is now ready to entertain acquisitions in this buyer's market.

The addition of JDM, Inc.'s print shop (above) adds significant
capacity to Transcontinental's direct mail production operations.

Quick Print Franchise Acquire Signs Business

Allegra Network is acquiring Signs Now Corporporation. "The emergence of digital technology in the graphic arts industry creates unique cross-over synergies among our printing brands and the sign industry," says Allegra COO Carl Gerhardt.
This is Allegra's fourth acquisition in the last 10 years: in 1995, the company acquired Canadian franchise Zippy Print with 37 sites; in 1998, they acquired 24 Quik Print and Instant Copy centers from XYAN, Inc.; and in 2002 they added 210 Insty-Prints locations. In total, Allegra has over 400 shops combined in the United States, Canada and Japan with sales of US$265 million. Signs Now will add over 240 locations in the U.S., Canada, the UK and Brazil and sales of more than US$70 million.

chairman and CEO William McIntyre, and Allegra
Network president Carl Gerhardt.

Fidelity National Pulls Printing out of Canada

Fidelity National Financial, Inc., a US$6.2 billion supplier of products, services and technology solutions to the financial and real estate industries, has closed up its Canadian printing operations in Scarborough, Ontario, moving the work to a Fidelity facility in Olathe, Kansas. The Canadian plant, equipped with cold web presses, ceased operations Jan 11. It's primary product was Multiple Listing Service books for real estate boards.
"Fidelity MLS Solutions prints MLS books for approximately 230 of its more than 360 MLS customers on a monthly basis," said Beverly Faull, senior vice president and general manager of Fidelity National MLS Systems and Solutions, in a company statement.
"Since less than 20 of these monthly books were printed in Canada, we believe it is beneficial to combine these operations and manage all printing and on-line operations from Kansas."
